I was curious if the batter would leak out, but I've just tried the smallest (4") pan, and it was fine. I put it on a baking sheet just in case, but didn't need to.
I guess that's what I was asking...I knew how they worked and why they had the bottom, just wasn't sure if I needed to protect my oven.
Going to do a mini cake and decorate it, just for photos...portfolio and practice, without having to eat a big cake LOL!
I can see how this hobby would play h#ll with a diet! LOL!
Lucky you! I've been looking in a my local thrift stores for a set like that. I did find a checker board set for 2.20.

My sister found me a 3 tier cake stand at a thrift store for $1 It is missing the tiers but that's no biggie. I FOUND a lamb cake pan in the trash once when I was cleaning out my car at a car wash.

My biggest pan finds were My Little Pony $2.99, Boba Fett .89, Thomas the Tank 1.99, Snoopy 1.99...I could go on and on because I collect pans.
Wish I could find the older Care Bears. 
cHYNA........my Mom used a set of the 9 inch round pans with removable bottoms for about 30 years or so with no leaking problems. Since her passing 5 years ago I have been using them with no problems and I also found a set of square ones at the thrift store for 1.00 and also have had no leaking problems. I use parchment paper sometimes and at other times I just use the shortening/flour...both work fine. So bake away with no worries

They should work similar to the tube pan I use for my pound cakes. The only time I had a problem with one leaking was after I dropped it on the floor (empty thank goodness), it put a small dent in the side, close to the bottom where the removable bottom connects. I guess with that dent, it didn't form it's seal properly. But, I've replaced it with another....I did look for a one-piece pan, but couldn't find one. I haven't had any problems with my new one. Congrats on the find!! I'm such a miser myself!! I don't buy it unless I have a coupon or it's on clearance!!
