Does anyone have a great way to make black icing black and not look gray? This will be used on a batman cake. Thanks.

Use Americolor Super Black! It works great and is black black. Some people start with chocolate BC to get a headstart on a darker color but I've used it with white and still get great results.

Start with chocolate icing as the base, then add the black coloring. Also, letting it sit for a while will only help the color to become darker.

If you can't start with chocolate, start with coloring your icing a light brown and then go up with the black.. I had to do this recently with my monster truck cake... the mom didn't want chocolate icing.. see my photos, it was super black!

This is what I do as well. The chocolate icing works really well and you don't have to use alot of black coloring. be sure to let it sit a couple minutes and you'll see how nicely it darkens.

It was a few years ago but I remember when I went to a cake decorating store, they had these dark wafers and they said if you want to make black icing, you darken the icing somehow with these and then add the black....

Another tip is to color the icing a few days in advance. It will darken as it sits.
