Hello everyone! I am making a cake today and I need some advice on colors. My chocolate buttercream is very light in color. I have already frosted the cake and I just need to decorate it now. I think I want to attempt to put roses on it (I have never done a rose before, so that might be a dumb idea to attempt it....so any suggestions on how to decorate it would help too. I know, that is a very vague request!) ANYWAYS.... my real question is: What color(s) should I use to decorate it? The brown is VERY light. Thanks for any help....I have to have the cake finished by 2:00! icon_smile.gif

brown and pink looks really good...or to make it look extra chocolaty...use a darker brown, or melted chocolate...check my photos

If I'd never made roses.......and needed to have the cake finished by 2pm....I'd take a look at sotas or cornelli lace for the top of the cake from the same soft brown icing....and maybe some pretty swags on the sides.....and some dusty rose colored drop flowers directly onto the cake at the swag points (after practicing them, of course).....and a nice moss green for the leaves and stems. Roses are a pretty big order "by 2 pm"....LOL! I'm not a gambler on these projects. Have you done buttercream flowers????? I'd stay with more muted colors......... GOOD LUCK!!!!

Cakefairy~ I think we were posting at the same time! I like the darker chocolate idea too icon_smile.gif

Thanks so much for the detailed ideas! icon_lol.gif I CANNOT get my chocolate buttercream darker for the life of me! UGH! Yeah, some swags on the sides...good idea. I have done many buttercream flowers, just not any roses. I know, kind of elementary and I should know how to do them, but I have only been decorating for about a year now and I have just never attempted them. I guess I will save them for my next cake....when I can practice more. I was thinking pink would be a good idea....the cake is for my boyfriend's grandmother, so pink would be ok. Thanks for the ideas....keep 'em coming! icon_biggrin.gif

When you say add chocolate, do you mean add chocolate to the frosting? or just use the chocolate by itself? I know this is probably a dumb question, but I am VERY new to cake decorating so I am in my information gathering stage.

White, pink, yellow, red....

I don't think chocolate should keep you from doing any colors combination that you want to. icon_smile.gif

I think using pink is a great idea. I also do not do well with roses. I think the flowers in your photos look great. Another idea if you do not want to do flowers is to decorate the cake with candy bars and other assorted candies. I did this before because I could not think of anything else and it was a huge hit. icon_smile.gif
