Nuts

Hey, this may be a stupid question - but do nuts go bad. Like peanuts, pecans and almonds. I have been given a whole bunch and just not sure if these things go bad. I know to put them in the freezer and stuff, but I also know that they came from the freezer to me (so they thawed) and I am not chopping these up and was going to put them back in the freezer. will they be okay?? thanks

I would think they'd be fine to put back in the freezer. I'm thinking for every person who says to go ahead and re-freeze, you'll get an equal number who say no. Maybe do a web search on nuts?

Wrapped tight in the freezer nuts can last up to a year. If they smell bad don't use them. Nuts have oil and can go rancid. HTH

Nuts definitely go bad/rancid and it tastes so bad you would never forget that taste. Freezing extends the life of them and I don't see any reason why you couldn't refreeze them. When you thaw them out taste them. If they aren't bitter but seem a little stale, try roasting them just a little on low heat on the stove or in the oven. Be very careful not to burn them.

nuts go rancid - any thing with oil can . . . I agree the freezer is a great option for keeping them for a long time.

Yep, I've done it before. Refreezing doesn't hurt the taste or texture at all. Like someone else said, they last for a year. I usually use mine before that long, though.
