How do I get my icing a true red color? Please help....... I'm fairly new at this and whenever I try for a red, I only get pinks no matter how much coloring I add. HELP! What am I doing wrong?

I have never used Ateco myself. I use Americolor Super Red and it came out great. I did a Valentine's Day cake and the red was great.

I have Americolor's red red and used it the other day. How much do you use initially? I thought I'd heard you use a little bit of this brand to get a great deep color, but I used quite a bit and got a puky pink color. Also my icing had a wierd glossy sheen to it. I threw it out. frustrating, and I ordered this brand because of the raves I read on cc.

I have the tulip red too but evidently I'm not using enough of either of the reds.

CarolAnn,
I learned the hard way that you can use to much Americolor. I just started out with just a squirt of Americolor Super Red, I put it an entire batch of BC icing, and then added one more squirt and it looked like a very dark pink but by the time I decorated the cake and then by the time I took it to work the next day it was the perfect shade of red. The best advice I have is to just play around with it. If you have the icing and time just try using small amounts and let it set for a while then see what color it becomes. It is best if you leave it overnight.

Can this product be purchased at Michaels? If not is there a different store I can buy it?

no matter what brand of coloring I am using I always color my icing with pink first. I get it a nice shade of pink then I add red. This has worked very consistently for me (even with Americolor)

If at all possible though make it a day or two ahead and let sit, it will darken as it sits.

brandymom, what if I'm only needing to color a portion of my icing? I mixed this and let it sit for hours and no change. More color only seemed to change the consistency of the icing but not the color. I guess I need to plan farther ahead.

CarolAnn, I have found that to get a true true red the Super Red in any brand usually gets me there. The other reds seem to just be a shade. But it depends on what your idea of a red color is also. You may want to try the different shades.

Also I originally bought the small bottle through CakeCentral and found that I used it up quickly-I thought it still took a lot more than it should, but compared to other brands it definitely didn't take as much.

HTH

And good luck with your search for the perfect red!

I, too, use Americolor Super Red. It definitely darkens after it sits overnight. The first time I used it I was shocked by how dark it was the next day. I definitely like it better than Wilton color. The Americolor Black is much much better, IMO.

By the way, welcome to CC.
