Will Straws Support A Separator Plate And 6" Cake?

I am making my first stacked cake and I am trying to figure out how to dowel it. It will be a 2 layer 8" round on the botom and a 2 layer 6" on top with cookie pop accents. I want to use a separator plate so should I use wooden dowels or will straws be strong enough?

i've done that before with straws and didn't have any problems.
