A Big Order Of Ccs...pricing Question
Decorating By imnamor95 Updated 16 Feb 2007 , 6:13am by SweetResults
I just got an order for 4 doz ccs for a bday party. I usually chg $1.25 per cc or $13 a doz, now, she is asking for a "deal" bc she is ordering so many...
. I don't know, I consider all of my ccs "decorated" bc I always do "something" to them, whether it be little candies, non-pareils, stars, etc...I was thinking maybe $45? I still think that's a big discount, considering...What do u think? ![]()
I would give her a 10% discount. Tell her that's what all of your 'good' customers get.
Sounds good to me! 4 doz is a lot to decorate, you don't want to get shorted for your time! good luck!!
I charge $1.75 minimum each for decorated cupcakes, but on an order of 4 dozen, I would also give a 10% discount, making mine $75 for 48 cupcakes! I do scratch bake and use all-butter buttercream though. I think $45 is a steal whatever!
Yeah, I guess I could say 10% off to her, that is about what I was gonna charge her anyway, lol. Yeah, mine are also done from scratch, the cake and the frosting too. My sister says I should bring my prices "DOWN", and I told her, if u want something good, then, u need to pay for it. Some people! I am already selling for less than I want to anyway!
So, I'll let u know what she says and how things go, thx for ur advice everyone! ![]()
I usually charge $1.50/doz and they are "fancy" cupcakes. Meaning that they are always decorated with flowers, or some some sort of design.
For 4 dozen, it would be $72 - I would probably say $70. For home bakers, it tough for us to give bigger breaks since we buy everything in such small quantities.
We charge $1.75 a cupcake and do not give deals. This is why. We make your cupcakes for the day they are ordered (the buttercream was made that day too!) not 2-3days a head of time like a lot of other places around us. They are so moist and good that people love them. We also have a cutoff point on how many cakes and things we make per a day to keep quality of our product in mind.
Now they think they may save some money going someplace else and they often do but they always come back to us cause they learn real fast quality is the key to any product. You may lose 1 order but you will gain a customer for life by doing quality work. They will not care about discounts because it is so good. Do people give discounts on a fine bottle of wine? NO ! That is what you need to ask yourself. I feel you are being taken advantage of here. ![]()
Sorry but isn't she already getting a reduced rate at the $13 per dozen?? I don't think 4 dozen is that large a quantity tp warrent ANOTHER discount, maybe 10 dozen...She is already getting them for a steal at the discounted rate. I don't think she should get more of a discount. Does it take less time to do 4 dozen instead of 1? NO, it takes more!! JMI.
Best of luck!
Tracy
actually, most places do give you a discount on your wine if you buy a case of it.
And to me 4 dzo ccs is't a particularly huge order. just my opinion.
I was talking about Fine quality wine not boones farm. ![]()

Thx guys. This means the world to me. I don't want to feel "cheap" for not giving her a discount but at the same time I feel like I am underselling myself. I do consider my cakes "fancy", I mean, they r all done by hand, not machines. And, I'm not bragging, but, at work, some of the "finer people", a-hem, lol, have come to tell me how "beautiful" my cupcakes are. I felt so honored, on Mon, this one lady, told me that she loves my ccs bc they look like what they sell in this "quaint little bakery" that sells beautiful ccs and cakes. omg, I was elated! Anyway, she called again to find out how much I was gonna charge her and I told her that I have to check on the design she wanted and the least I was gonna charge her was $47 for a "simple" design. This convo was thru a 3rd party, my sister. ![]()
I just luv it when a customer "thinks" they are ordering "volume" from me. ![]()
I've had people ask for a "volume" discount if they order 4-6 doz cookies. I fold my arms, get my "Mom" look on my face and proceed to tell them: "I have a customer who orders 20 dozen cookies daily. Every day. That's over 100 dozen per week. THEY get a volume discount. Now ..... HOW many were you thinking of ordering?"
What some people call "volume", I call "hardly worth turning on my oven for".
The purpose of a volume discount is because you, as a result of their CONSISTENT ordering, are able to buy your raw materials at a lower cost and therefore passing the savings on to them. It's because you, as a result of their CONSISTENT ordering, are able to schedule your bake time so it's as time efficient as possible, saving you labor costs, which you are able to pass on to them.
A volume discount is not given just because you buy a lot. It's given because it represents a cost savings in bulk buying .... be it bulk buying raw materials or bulk buying labor costs. No savings .... no discount.
Now .... HOW many did they want to order? ![]()
I agree with indydebi - 4 doz is not a large amount. Certainly does not qualify for a discount. You said you charge $1.25 per or $13 a doz - so she is already getting a discount at $52. Next time she will want an additional discount because she is a repeat customer or some such crazy thing!
I don't blame her (or anyone else) for asking for a discount, I am from the "You never know if you don't ask" mindset - but that certainly doesn't mean that you HAVE to GIVE the discount! Don't shortchange yourself. As far as your sister telling you to reduce your prices - total your cost, multiply by 3 and see how much you are NOT getting paid for! See if she'd work that hard for that much per hour ![]()
Personally I'd rather make a 3D carved or tiered cake for 48 people than make 48 cupcakes!! LOL!
