I am going to enter my first cake show and saw a really amazing cake online and was wondering if it was tacky to try and do my spin on the idea for my entry. It is an amazing cake and I am curious to figure out how they did it, but have a fear that people will think I'm ripping off the idea rather than being inspired by it. I'm not even sure who made the cake, I found the pic randomly online. I keep thinking what if that baker is at the same show I'm going to. Who knows it may even be someone quite famous. Any thoughts?? How do you get your ideas??

Don't worry about using a photo as inspiration for a cake. No one ever complains if someone takes an idea for a cake and runs with it. It's when people take the picture copied as is and post it to their sites that people get peeved icon_mad.gificon_mad.gificon_mad.gif .. Think about how many brides bring in photos of cakes they've seen elsewhere for the decorator to recreate. Your interpretation of the cake is going to be different than the original creators. Imitation is a sincere form of flattery.

If you are using a pic to get ideas and inspiration that's one thing, but I wouldn't do a copy of another cake for a competition. If it's a famous designer you can bet the others in the show will know it. It may belittle your skill if people think you just copied someone else.

I don't think its tacky to use it as inspiration. What I would probably do, though, is take a good long look at the cake and then not look at it again until after your cake is completed.

I do want to enter a cake show as well for the first time and was wondering the same. I also would like to know if the cake was to be a real cake or it could be a dummy. I am a beginer ( I saterted like 7 months ago) so I do not know how those things work.
Thanks so much.

Maybe you could just use some of the elements of the cake and change the colors.

Dummies can be used unless you are entering a Sculpted Category. The show you are entering should have a list of rules to follow. Good Luck with your entry.
