I'd like to make a 3D fish cake and have seen some amazing cakes in the gallery. Wondering if anyone could provide me some tips on the carving of the fish out of the sheet cake.

Also, it looks like most of the fish have been airbrushed. I don't have an airbrush but have used the Wilton sprays before. Do you think I could get the same effect with them? They tend to have a large spray area so I'm not sure I'd be able to get the detail, shading, blending that I'm looking for.

Any other ideas on how to get this coloring effect with MMF? What about painting? I've never done that before - do I just use my color gels mixed with Vodka?

Thanks in advance!

I have used everclear and gel colors and I actually had a great result. I used greens and browns to get the coloring. I did cover the cake in Fondant and used a number ten tip to press in the scales. HTH

Your cake fish looks great. I guess I'll try the painting method and see how that goes. Do you wait for the fondant to dry a bit, or can you start painting right away?

I just paint right away!

I covered mine with fondant and then painted with silver luster dust, mixed with lemon extract. The cake shape is made by cutting a 9 x 13 in the shape of an "eye".

MrsMissy - Your cake is beautiful. In fact, I have it stored in my favorites so I can reference while making mine. How did you do the fins and tail? I assume they are fondant painted, but how did you get the texture?

Thanks!

Thanks so much! The fins and the tail are just pieces of fondant painted with silver luster dust. The texture is done with a toothpick. After you cut the pieces, drag a toothpick over the fondant several times. Drag the toothpick right off the edge and that will give you the "ragged" look on the edge.
