I thought doll cakes seem too much cake and not enough frosting when serving. So on the most recent doll cake I did, I sliced it half way through and put buttercream in between to make it a layer cake. (I also use all buttercream to cover my doll pick and my doll cake.)
Here's my extra tip. After I sliced through and before I took the top off, I stuck two toothpicks in it, one below the cut and one above. This marked exactly how to place the top back on exactly where it was originally positioned so it would be even. I have no picture posted because I am still using the old fashioned 35mm camera.
I have another tip to add. My first doll cake I torted filled, and it slid durring transport. When I did a mug-shaped cake using the same bowl to bake in, I still wanted to torte and fill without risking the top sliding at all.
I torted the cake (using the toothpick trick here would been very helpful) and dug out a little well for filling, keeping a ridge on the outer edge. So putting the top half back on, it meets up perfectly cake-to-cake. For extra reinforcement, I brushed piping gel on the ridge to get some extra "stick" there.
Worked really well.
I love the toothpick tip! Try as I might, I can never get the top back on the bottom right - on any cake. I am trying that today!
Amazing what can get someone excited!!
Dee, did it work out for you?
Toothpicks! A cake decorator's versitle tool! Do you think the inventor ever thought they'd be used for so much besides picking teeth?
