I Need Advise From The "painters" In The Crowd!!

So my painting instructor is now HOOKED on painting on cakes and wants to do a particular technique the last class we have. Here goes:
The background is black with a red/pink rose painted on it. My question is how do I get the effect? In paint it is black painted background; rose done in clear red and then go over the red in white paint to get a "pink/red" effect.
1. Do I need to use black MMF, red piping gel and white-white color?
What do you think? I told her that I would bring in the cakes (I'm taking 4" round torted with something) and the equipment to paint them.
My last class isn't until the last Wednesday in March, but, I have a couple of cakes before then and I may be teaching Wilton at Hobby Lobby in a month or two so I want to factor that in!
TIA!!

I've never tried it but I think your idea might work.
