I've been asked if I can do a cake for a wedding shower on Saturday. It is a couples shower and the theme is Around the Clock. It's a shower where they receive items throughout the day. I'm going to call back b/c I'm not sure exactly what this would include. (housewares, cleaning supplies, linens, etc)?

She said I could do whatever I wanted but I would like to plan a theme cake if at all possible. If I don't do a theme cake do you have any ideas? She has only seen one cake I've done---it was a baby blue w/ small dots all over. People don't understand that it's easier when they give specifics! And I'm not comfortable enough to do fondant, unless it's a few decorations, but I would like to keep it as simple as possible (I'm a little over 8 mo. pregnant & ache if I sit or stand too long)

One last question is how do you determine a price? I will be making a 9" round and then whatever I decide to decorate. I know more simple is cheaper, but this will be my first round cake to sell & I've only sold 1 sheet cake.

Please HELP!

how about instead of one big cake...

12 small cakes, each no larger than 6 inches. (small enough for you to do sitting down)

each is a different hour of the day. half in yellow for daytime hour, 1/2 in blue for night (could be side by side or top yellow and sides blue)

then two designs on each: one for day and one for night.

example:

12 --> night: cookies midnight snack / day: plate (lunch!)

1 --> night: do not disturb! / day: antacid (oops...bad lunch!)

2--> night: pillow (finally!) / day: email -- thinking of you (awwww)

3 -- night: flashlight (find way to bathroom) etc.

(i avoided the more risque possibilities -- but, hey, if it's the right crowd, TrojanMan could make an appearance too!)

cakes would then be arranged in circle as on clock face.

hands could be sheet cake, cut/carved and stacked

message on hands: it's always time for you
or there's no good time until it's YOU time
or you fill my time with love

HEY EVERBODY -- more suggestions for hours of day needed! post please

----------

ohhhh...another thought....the decorations could be little toys or such instead of having to be made!

That's a great idea, but she did ask for a 9" round & I would have to purchase smaller pans to do the other. My dh had suggested the crazy moon/sun--kinda like a ying yang. I know what he's talking about but can't find a picture to give me the idea. But she did say the presents are typical and that she'll find out what the colors are.

Maybe if she can give you the colors or an idea of what she's doing for decorations, you can go from there. I did a cake for a "round the clock" shower, instead of doing a "clock" themed cake, we just replicated the colors from the invite. I thought adding numbers to some of the dots would have been cute (she didn't want that). Hope that helps!

There is a good idea for one in the galleries by lynz. You could change the colors to go with your shower colors. Good luck!!

Really cute cake Cakesbyallison! I just found out tonight that their colors are black, white, and a peachy salmon color. I personally don't have that color nor do I recall seeing it at the local cake decorating store.

Since finding out the colors I've thought about frosting white buttercream smooth & putting a black ribbon around the bottom. Or if I could try it to frost it white & do black scroll work (if I could find a pattern to go by) or black dots. I wish I could do the corneli lace but haven't learned it yet.

But I think I've decided to go w/ black & white just not sure on what I want to do totally

How about making the top like the face of a clock- white background, hands of clock black. You can put some of the numbers on- like the 12-3-6-9. Then in between them use symbols in place of the other numbers- like diaper, rattle, rubber ducky, bottle, diaper pin, etc. This is where you can bring in the salmon and other colors. The symbols could be chocolates, or molded sugar pieces.

Ok- so I spaced out on that one- was thinking of a baby shower!
Still, the clock face would work, and maybe around the side write "Love is timeless/or everlasting/or forever"

I want to thank everyone for their awesome ideas. Maybe if I had more time to plan and decorate I would & will definitely keep these ideas in mind for the future. But I think I've decided to go w/ a simple white cake (maybe embossed w/ a crisscross pattern--kind of a lattice look--around the edges) w/ a black ribbon around the bottom. I've thought about doing a more extraordinary cake, but we are having to go out of town on Sat. which will give me 2 hours to decorate, deliver & get ready to leave. Not plausible so I think I'll be keeping it simple.

But now I have the problem of how much to charge. I don't want to charge too little so everyone thinks I'll do it for pennies & I have tons of cake orders, but don't want to charge so much that no one wants to ask me to do a cake. And the person has decided today they want me to flavor the icing as well. This is really why I don't like doing many cakes b/c minds change too much & too often.

I've been charging $25 for a simple 9". Plan to update my brochure soon with new info and poss. raise my prices -so that size may go up to $30- haven't decided yet.

Too bad I didn't read this sooner. I would have suggested you buy a clock assemply at the craft store (the kind that is a little black box and the hands that come detached). You could have wrapped the box in clear packing tape and placed it in a hole cut in the center of the cake. To cover the hold I would have made a colored MMF circle with a hole in the middle to allow the hands to be connected to the mechanism. For each hour perhaps the small candy molds of a bride and groom, bells, dove, etc. The clock would actually work!

Why thank you Doug,
Coming from you I consider that a BIG compliment icon_biggrin.gif . I failed to mention that I thought a second hand for sure would be good so people would know it is a working clock.

Thank again.
