ok so in our area there have been a lot of school districts closing down due to a high number of absences. not sure if this is happening all over the country or just here. so tomorrow is vday and was supposed to be both of my sons parties well i made 46 cupcakes for both classes 23 for each. got my icing made and about to ice the cupcakes and my kids come home and tell me school is cancelled for the res of the week. icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif so now the boys aren't sure when they are going to get to have their parties at school. so i have these cupcakes and i dont like cake!!! lol

i am sending them to work with my dh and taking some to my uncle who loves cake. anyone else having to deal with school closing due to illness and not snow!!!!

I don't have quite that problem but I might be stuck with a cake. The nurses called and said my son was running a fever so I went and picked him up and I don't know if he'll be okay to go to school tommorow.
He told his teacher that he's coming in no matter what, it's a big day because his class is having the parents in for lunch along with the party.

As far as I know it is mainly around East Texas. The flu is going around pretty bad right now and a lot of schools have about 200 or more students absent per day because of it. Some of the schools are closing down for a few days to try and stop the spread as well as to disinfect the schools.

Believe me, schools do not want to close! Think of all the state money they lose!
If there are so many kids out, the teachers have a very hard time teaching. If half of your students (or more) are gone, you're just going to have to do it all over again anyway. They might also not have enough substitutes to cover all the teachers that are sick.
I think they should have given you more notice that it was a possibility, but I understand why it might be necessary.

I'm sorry you're stuck with all the goodies though. I'm actually amazed. No one is allowed homemade treats in our schools.

Last year that happened to a few schools around here. More that 1/3 of the students were absent for several days, so they needed to close for a few days to give all students time to recover and stop the spread of the flu. I don't know if it has anything to do with state laws, but I know it was a big deal and all over the news.

I'm sorry about the cupcakes. We are off school because of snow. Luckily, it wasn't my turn to bake. We'd never eat the cupcakes either. Do you have to make another batch for tomorrow?

Well, we are having a mild outbreak of flu here in Southern VA, but today our schools went 2 hours late for weather...it was raining and in the mid-30s! I just don't understand!

Sorry about your cupcakes, if I could, I would happily take them off your hands. icon_smile.gif

I agree with you to a point. I am sad for you that you put in all the work and they don't know when they will have there party. But Influenza is a very bad thing. In our area about a week ago there were at least 10 smaller town out of school. Several surounding counties are having this problem. I live in a larger town and so far we haven't closed but have had several outbreaks. I would much more prefer my school be out do to illness than to have my child get it. Even though our town has not dismissed I have friends and there children that are suffering with this illness. AS A MOM I DO NOT WANT IT. I have done it before and don't want it again. Just my opinion. As I said I am sorry for your lose of goods. I would be frustated as well. But the childrens health is very important. In our area 2 children have died do to complications of Influenza.

Sorry about your cupcakes, I'm sure that everyone at your DH's work enjoyed them. It's not only Texas schools that have been closed b/c of sick teachers/kids. My boy's school hasn't been closed (it was close to it at one point), but several around our area have been. My youngest DS was out from one Wednesday to the next with the flu, it wasn't fun at all!! And they are just now getting started back on regular classes b/c so many kids had missed over a two-week period. I hope that your kids get to have their Valentine's party when they go back! icon_smile.gif
