Ok... so the school colors in my town are RED, very RED.. and i am hoping to need to make many graduation cakes in the spring..

I just had my Wilton 1 class final cake and thought i would go ahead and begin to learn making RED. BUT... Red was way hard, i think i used HALF a jar of red coloring. Then i added black. Then more red. Then purple, thinking well.. purple is blue & red. maybe it will deepen the red.

Any tips or easier way to get a real RED?

Thanks

Sorry, I don't have an easy way to make red...it usually just takes a lot of coloring! If i have to make a lot of red, I usually airbrush...but you can also start with pink, then add your red to deepen it to your desired shade. I like to use the wilton, no-taste red coloring-but the red-red will give you a deeper shade!

BTW, ...your shade of red that you ended up with is really pretty, reminds me of fresh roses from the florist!

I use the Americolor Red, and it works nicely. I still have to use quite a bit, but it colors way better than any other. Make your icing a few days in advance and it will darken as it sit. When I made the red cake in my pics, it was actually a salmon like color when I stopped adding color and 3 days later it was Red.

"Americolor Red-Red" will give you a nice deep red color, without the nasty bitter taste.

For red I like to use powdered food color. This will not alter the taste of your icing and will yield a deep color if you make it early and let it sit overnight. You'll still use quite a bit of the coloring, but it's worth it not to have bitter tasting icing.

When I make red icing I usually make my frosting with the butter flavored Crisco - it tends to darken faster than the white. You still need to use quite a bit of color but it does work
