Just wondering how many bakers are dedicated to particuliar brand names when it comes to baking.

I myself am a military wife, and when we moved to Florida, I suddenly discovered that they don't carry certain brands that I prefer to use.

For example w/ my granulated, confectioner, and brown sugar - I prefer the C & H brand...it's what I like, and I am having a hard time buying any other brand (call me weird, but the other brands seem inferior icon_razz.gif ).

So while we were home for Christmas...hubby bought me some sugar (10lb bag)...not quite enough icon_wink.gif , but I adore him just the same. So before we left to come back to Florida...I ended up buying a 25lb bag of granulated sugar, as well as 16lbs confectioner sugar, and 16lbs of brown sugar (thank God we weren't pulled over...I highly doubt the police officer would have bought the story of "it's just sugar" icon_lol.gif )

So what do you do when you can't find the brand you prefer, do you suck it up and go w/ another brand...or do you go to the extreme and buy in bulk, or order directly from the company?

dominos for sugar (both granulated and powdered), soft as silk for cake flour, gold medal and/or pillsbury unbleached all purpose flour for those recipes I don't use cake flour for. Land o lakes butter, but I've been xperimenting with costco' Kirkland brand and seeing good results. Chepaer, so I may start defaulting to that. I take note when those brands go on sale and/or have a coupon and stock up.

since you said unbleached flour can you tell me if your cakes come out different witht hat versus bleached flour?

Interesting you said domino i HATE domino. i bought it at acme when it was 10 for $10 and it had hard chunks in it. Ive never had to sift my sugar. it actually looked tlike there was plaster in it.

I agree iwht the cake flour though and the land o lakes butter (but i do lean towards shoprite breand if landolakes isnt on sale).

I have three items that I am brand specific about:

Daisy sour cream
Land 'O Lakes unsalted butter
Red Band all-purpose flour

I am extremely loyal to these brands and I know that I would have a hard time switching if these were ever to be discontinued or not available in my area so I totally understand your car full of sugar. icon_biggrin.gif

If land O' lake butter isn't on sale I will go with another brand, but when it is on sale I stock up and put in the freezer. I only ever use unbleached flour in my baking. I don't get the enriched kind either. It doesn't effect the baked good at all and is healthier for you in the long run. (as healthy as a true baked good can get anyways icon_wink.gif )

Breakstone Sour cream
Land o lakes salted butter
Flour-gold medal
sugar-dixie crystals
baking powder-calumet
dominos brown sugar
Argo corn starch
Wilton clear vanilla
Softassilk cake flour
dominos powdered sugar
creamer-Carnation
evaporated milk- carnation
eagle brand sweetened condensed milk
carnation powdered milk (bread)

there are a few others out there, but these I buy religiously.... if the commissary doesnt have it then I go find it.....if they have it and even if it's not on sale I'll get it.....there are just some things I prefer to stick with.
