I have a recipe that I like a lot but am curios about different flavors like chocolate, lemon, etc. Does anyone use different flavors for cookie decorating? Can I sub some cocoa for flour in the recipe to make chocolate? Add some lemon extract and zest for lemon? Is it better to leave it plain? TIA!

I add fresh lemon juice often to the sugar cookie recipe and also to my royal icing. I also added raspberry syrup like you see used in specialty coffees to white MMF and want to try it in a sugar cookie also.

I find mocha and cocoa makes a better flavor in a cookie unless you opt to use real melted chocolate? More work but worth it in flavor.

Toba's book has lots of really good recipes, also one for orange or lemon cream cookies which do use zest. I just made those for someone in AL.

I say give it a try. I have substituted 1/2 cup cocoa powder for 1/2 cup flour in the sugar cookie recipe I use. I've also read about a lot of people using lemon extract or other flavorings in place of the vanilla extract in their recipes. Good luck and let us know how they turn out.

I add 3 oz. of premelted baking chocolate to my sugar cookie recipe when I want chocolate cut-outs. Works great. (I use a similar recipe to the NFSC recipe on this site, only it's about half the size). I have also added lemon, orange, or almond in place of the vanilla, and they're yummy.
