Do I have to have a baking core to bake a 14in round cake? I have a cake due tomorrow and I can't find the baking cores anywhere.

I would use 2 flower nails for that size. Make sure you grease them up well.

Turned upside down meaning, the flat end touching the bottom of the pan or the other way?

Yes, that's the way. When you flip the cake over, you can easily remove the flower nails. I also grease & flour them.

head of flower nail down. The pointed end up with the head laying flat on bottom of pan. VERY WELL GREASED.

make sure that when you turn your cake out that you put the flower nail through one of the holes in your cooling rack, once you turn it over the little legs on the cooling rack have enough height to where the flower nail stays in place, and yes, definitely grease it very well, else it will tear up your cake.

I used to always say a little prayer with my heating core, sometimes it didn't matter how much you greased that thing up, cake still stuck to it, now, I dont' have to worry about it!
