I'm very very new to cake decorating and new to posting on these forums. Pretty much every day I've been trying to make a little something... a cake or a new type of icing, etc. Today I wanted to branch out and try just a simple 2 tier cake, with the base being 8" and the top being 6". I know dowels and such are used for bigger tier cakes, but would I need to use them for this one? I didn't really know at what size/weight to start using reinforcements like that. Thanks!!!!!

Technically, yes, and I'm sure most CC's will say that.

I personally think that it depends on if the 2nd tier will be heavy enough to sink into the bottom tier. If there's no filling, or not much of it, and there is no fondant covering.....I think it will be OK without all the dowels and cake board in between.

I would use some kind of support, you could probably get away with using straws for just a 6".
