I'm getting ready to head out to get last minute stuff for my DD's party this weekend. Can I use the melts or is regular chocolate better?

You can use either. The recipe is the same. IMHO, chocolate clay made from real chocolate tastes better.

Chocolate clay is a clay made from chocolate or candy melts, melted and mixed with corn syrup. You can use it to make figures and stuff just like fondant. You should try it. It's great fun! The recipe in in the recipes here.

Chocolate clay is fun! I used it on my cookies and the white cake with pink and brown roses in my pics. You can use candy melts. The recipe calls for 10oz chocolate and 1/3 cup light corn syrup. You melt your chips then fold in the syrup. It will automatically ball up. Spread out on wax paper and let cool. After about two hours it should be ready to use. Just knead and use like fondant. If you are covering a cake make sure to add a little crisco while you knead. It will make it more elastic.

the only problem I had with the candy melts is that they sort of leak oil, but after they set for a few hours, it gets kneaded back in

After putting the chocolate clay in the fridge overnite, was able to use it with little problem (have to work quick as it gets soft fast), so here is a picture of my first chocolate (candymelt) clay rose!

Well, I just made my first batch of the clay with candy melts. I did yellow for the bottom of Snow White's dress (for my DD's party this weekend). I melted, mixed, and they are "resting" now! icon_biggrin.gif

One question...is it supposed to look a little greasy when you first lay it on the paper to cool? I just wanted to make sure I did everything right....

oh, one more question...I put it on waxed paper. When it's "set" will it come off the paper? icon_surprised.gif Just wondering because it's been on the paper for 1.5 hours and it's still pretty stuck! I *have* been baking and stuff, though.

MrsMom - whenever I make chocolate clay I lay a piece of wax paper on a jelly roll pan and spread my chocolate clay out flat and let it sit for 2hrs and it's ready and I've never had a problem with it sticking to the wax paper. I've even left it over night before and it didn't stick.

Thanks for the compliments! icon_biggrin.gif Yes the candymelts do cause greasyness (must be how they are made). I put mine on plastic wrap - do think it will stick to the waxed paper. As far as sticking it on the cake, it was a buttercream icing, so I just pushed it on the cake into the icing. When I get home from work tonite, will have to post a pic of the cake it was put on.
