Heya all,
I have a question:
I made some fondant roses last night for a cake (my first fondant roses, mind you) can whip out royal and buttercream in a flash)). The bugger was like huge and heavy. Is that they way they are sposed to be?
Perhaps my base was too big (used a base about the size of a hershey kiss.) but after adding my petals that darn thing weighed quite a bit
. I used the circle cutters that are about 1.5 inches for the petals.
So, do i use a base (like buttercream) or do i just form the central petal and then the corresponding petals around it??
Any and all help would be most appreciated.
O and by the way I am new to the forum and too the wonderful world of fondant. ![]()
Welcome to cakecentral!
Yes...we are out here and glad to help!! LOL!!
The base for fondant or gumpaste roses should be a lot smaller than a hershey kiss!! It should be shaped more like a thin cone...I like to let it let dry before attaching the petals! HTH!
Hey chaptlps.........(chaptlps, that's funny) ~ I just made some of these for only the second time last night. I agree that your base was the problem. They're super easy -AND GORGEOUS- when you get the hang of them. Honestly, I've just learned, ant they look real. Hang in there!!!
I use Burt's Bees lip balm. You should try it.
GOOD STUFF.
I too am learning them and someone turned me onto a great picture tutorial of them..I know the link has also been posted here somewhere but here it is for you...is from jeff arnett

I tried this with a fondant and added some gum tex to it but the pictures should really help..
This is the first time making a rose and was without the tutorial so now having it i can't wait to try it again
hope this helps
Hi Chaptlps,
The way I learned to make fondant roses in the Wilton Class is to make your base on a toothpick.
It should be about the size of a Q-tip (maybe a little smaller)...Stick the toothpicks in a styrofoam block and let them dry over night....Then, if you are making quite a few you can do them kinda like an assembly line....Do you have the rose petal cutters and ball tool? They make it really easy.
I do each set of petals on all and then go to the next step...It goes pretty fast that way...You have to roll your fondant really thin also. It makes the petals look very realistic...Hope this helps and welcome....
omg i just love making fondant roses..me and my grandmother used to make bread in the shape of flowers and wreaths and all sorts of stuff for a family tradition of celebrating St. Joseph. After i learned how to do the fondant rose in course 3, i realized that i hate buttercream roses and i now have an excuse to spend a lot of time with my grandmother, b/c she can help me make fondant roses... ![]()
ok, after digesting all that you guys have suggested I have another question: Do you let each component dry before assembly or just sculpt it all in one sitting? The tutorial let each component dry before it was assembled but that was gumpaste. Is there a difference in the assembly of fondant? And if there is, what do you use to glue the petals to the base?
