my birthday is coming up and i know i should be using this opportunity to practice on different flavors and techniques that i've wanted to try....
but i just don't feel like making my own cake. icon_surprised.gif
i have an anniversary cake due 3 days later and then the following week i am doing a baby shower cake that i really want to knock out of the park. so, i really want to save my 'cake energy' for those cakes.

so, i asked my DH if he is going to make my birthday cake icon_rolleyes.gif and he said
'if you want a cake to look like a brick, i'm your man!' (he thinks he's funny)

so, i'll probably just end up making it and trying out a new flavor but, i seriously just want to slap on some buttercream and call it a day.

anyone else feel this way about their own birthday cakes?

Oh, I think you should go to a nice bakery and buy yourself a cake that someone else can labor over for you. icon_smile.gif Save your energy for the other cakes. At the Austin Cake Show, the sponsoring shop had samples and I had the most incredible mojito cake, and I thought, "this will be my birthday cake!". Unfortunately that's not until December. icon_cry.gif

Pie is always nice. I was thouroughly on Cake Overdose when my last birthday hit. I sent my DH to the store for a nice Cyrus O'leary pie. But if it has to be cake then I'm with kelleym, go try out some one elses handy work.

I made my own and tried out some new techniques and flavors. I was totally wiped out by then end of it.

I say, buy one! Give yourself the gift of time off!

Actually, my 40th birthday is today and YES I made my own cake. My mom was going to order one from the local bakery and I had a "fit". icon_wink.gif God knows that I stink at fondant, and I figured it's a good excuse to get some practice in. icon_razz.gif

However, if I had a cake business, I probably wouldn't want to make my cake either!

I usually make my own bday cake beause my aunt's bday is two days before mine and we usually celebrate together and they are very close to thanksgiving. This year I did make cheesecake for our bdays & thanksgiving. Plain w/strawberry sauce on the side, pumpkin and cinnamon apple. YUM!!

I do not like cake for the most part and the last thing I want to do is to put time and energy into making my own. (I know, this needs to be in the confession thread!!) I would be THRILLED if my hubby would go buy me some really great whole grain bread from a decent bakery and skip the cake all together!! icon_biggrin.gif

I refuse to make my own birthday cake...one because I am too busy with orders to do it and two, I get plenty of practice trying out new recipes and such on my three kids and 6 nieces and nephews (who may just put me out of business with all that free cake). My little ones demanded a cake for me last week and there is NO WAY DH would attempt a cake, so Baskin Robbins helped him out with an ice cream cake.

Why don't you go out for a nice dinner and tell them to "bring the dessert tray" and promptly make SEVERAL selections!!

Have a great birthday Cakerator!!!!

For my Bday, I baked the cake and made icing. Then I gave my hubby and the kids some of my tools and they made me a cake. It was the best cake ever....even though the frosting was like 6 inches thihck.
the kids where so proud of themselves that they got to make a cake for me.

I made my own birthday cake and yes I posted it also. Nobody makes cakes like I do especially in my neck of the woods.........

Do you want cake? Do you want the best cake? Then yes, you will probably have to make your own cuz I live to far away from you to drop off one of mine. icon_wink.gif Toot, toot!

I am so sick of eating cake I could scream! I have my husband make me rice krispy treats. Those are much better than cake in my opinion!

Happy Birthday! My 40th was a week ago,(2/6) I'm single so no hubby to buy me a cake, mom had knee surgery so she didnt make one either. My coworkers got me a King Kake (its mardi gras season down here) and that was just fine with me! i get a lil tired of birthday cake, king kake is a glorified pastry with fillings and LOTS of sugar!

But i'm with the others, buy a decadent cheesecake instead!

A very Happy Birthday, Happy Valentines, and Happy Mardi Gras to one and all. I do not make my own cakes. I grew up not having a birthday cake because my mother's birthday is the day before mine and my father's was the day after. We had just one cake for everyone. Now my dh takes me out to dinner and has the restaurant bring a special dessert or he makes a Nabisco refrigerator cake.(thin chocolate cookies sandwiched with whipcream).

I like Chefperl's suggestion myself. I know my son would just love to do something like that. icon_lol.gif But if you are sick of cake or don't like cake then do something else. Don't waste your energy. Save it all for your bussiness...

Happy Birthday!

Well, my 30th is tomorrow, and I'm not making a cake. DH has school tomorrow after work, and won't be home til around 10pm icon_cry.gif My boys are only 6 and 4, so nothing special is going on for it! We'll probably have hot dogs for dinner because they are easy, not messy, and the boys will eat them icon_cry.gif Happy birthday to me huh?!?!

My birthday was in January and my husband knew better than buying me a cake. He baked me a spice cake and my 13 yo daughter found a great recipe on line for cream cheese icing. so the two of them made my cake for me. Looked strange, but tasted great. I never make my own birthday cake.

Mine is coming up next weekend and I have told my family and friends that somebody had better learn how to bake in a hurry.

I do cakes for all of them and I am tired of getting store bought cakes. I don't care if they use a mix and they can even use canned frosting (gag) but I am determined to get them to make me something!!!
