Simple Syrup For A Yellow Cake With Chocolate Filling??

What simple syrup flavor can i use for a yellow cake that has a whipped chocolate ganache filling? (i was planning on using lemon,but not with chocolate, right?) so should i just use vanilla extract? any suggestions?
