Thank you! I figured out the design on my own. I had a picture in my head that I was going for, and since I have aready done a dragon I had ideas about what I wanted to try with this one. I'd been wanting to do a cake with this kind of stand too.
A bunch of people are asking for a tutorial but it seems like most people lose interest once they hear that you have to cut plywood into shapes, LOL.

NO LOST OF INTEREST!!! Please, I'm begging for a tutorial!!! ![]()

imho, you should charge what the cake is worth. if the customer wants a dragon, she should pay for the time and effort it takes. otherwise, she should ask for something less time consuming if the price is an issue.
That is exactly what I was thinking. If they can't or won't pay for it then they don't get something so elaborate. Simple enough. : )
Beautiful dragon btw!! : ) Great job!
I wanted to add what is with other people's kids at parties? (notice I don't include my own, LOL). Some little girl at my son's party walked up and pulled all the strings on the pinata at once (I don't even know who she was! She was much younger) and only one kid had got to pull a string. My son didn't even get to pull a string. I was so upset. The kids didn't care cause the candy fell out. But I cared, I paid $25 for that thing not including candy. The parent was no where to be found. GRRR....
sorry for the detour, LOL
You should do the book for sure!
I made a very simple tutorial for Thomas the Tank Engine, but of course it's not anything compared to your dragon. Also, can't sell mine, because Thomas is a licensed character. You have so much going for you in getting published, since no one has the rights to your design, you're incredibly talented, and all you need to do is take some great photos and write up the step by step instructions. Writing a tutorial is not an easy task! I learned that myself, but you have so much to work with already. ![]()
I'd start by looking at other how to cake decorating books to get the process of creating a step by step tutorial down, then go for it! Good luck to you!
My cheesy tutorial is at: http://www.squidoo.com/ThomastheTankEngine/
You'll find the link under "Make A Thomas Cake"... if anyone's interested!

I have an idea for a stand to make a particular cake but I can't find a good carpenter to fulfill my dream.
My guys over here are not handy and a carpenter would want to much money.
I remember purchasing the stand for the cowboy boots and that was OVER 300 bucks!
I would be first in line to pay for your stand! if you decide to sell them instead of sending a tutorial! same email..lol
I'm not sure the dragon is something you'd be able to get a trademark on since it is a common character, but who knows; you are talented enough to try to get a book published, anyway. hard to do - but worth a shot, I think.
but she can get a copy write on her stand!! that's ALL her!! ![]()
just saying not necessarily. Worth exploring, but you don't know until you apply. And a copyright is for printed material stuff, I believe. a trademark is for a character or licensing or a brand name. not seeing where the stand falls in there. you'd have to talk to a patent atty. or something.
Grogeous cake...lots of questions. What kind of cake do you use for something like this? Do you have to use a pound cake? Do you ever fill these kind of cakes? Did you carve the body from a cake? What kind of icing did you use and HOW did you create thsoe scales??? They are awesome. What about the fins?
Hmmm, I think I've asked almost enough questions for a tutorial. ![]()

OMG I would be sooooo mad if another kid pulled my kids pinata string!!! Almost every cake I've done for my kids, something gets broken off by the time it's time to cut it, LOL.
I did charge her over $100. It was probably about 25 servings. We had agreed on a general price before I even started. I told her next time it would be at least $200 to do something like this. There are a lot of people with $$ in my town so I'm trying to build up some customers and then raise prices once I get them all hooked!
I've only been doing cakes in this town for about 1 year. I used to do cakes in VT...

Your Thomas tutorial is NOT cheesy!! That's a really great Thomas cake! The face is perfect!

Actually Risque, I like the idea of making and selling stands. I enjoyed the whole process of figuring out just how to make it so it would work and be hidden. I have no idea how to copywrite something like a cake stand?? I do like the idea of selling tutorials on my website....which I'm still waiting on. I'm having a friend(computer guy) design it for me and he's a little slow.

I used chocolate cake b/c that's what they requested and it worked fine. I just filled it with BC. I used the template I made to cut the cake to the right shape, and then once I got it on the board I carved it. The scales are just fondant cut out circles, and the spikes are too.
I think I anwered all the questions. If not let me know!

This is the most awesome dragon cake I've seen! It's a work of art! Great work!!
holy smokes! that is an amazing cake! are each of those scales individual pieces of fonant put on by hand?? it looks incredible! and very delicious (although i think i'd be very sad to cut into it) ![]()
