I have an order for a beach themed cake. What does everyone uses as sand and how does it stick to the fondant? Thanks.

I have used granulated brown sugar or pure cane brown sugar. You can also use vanilla wafers all crunched up. Getting it to stick I would use either icing or somepiping gel.
Good luck

brown sugar, graham cracker crumbs, vanilla wafer crumbs

If you need it to stick to the fondant, apply a little water-works best with brown sugar IMO.

I did a beach cake with sand... I used brown sugar... I also added blue coloring to my piping gel to make it match the fondant, brushed it under the area where the brown sugar would be, and kind of made a shoreline.. worked great, stuck well!

You know how brown sugar is kinda sticky and not really sandy cuz of the moisture. Could you use sugar in the raw? Or maybe the granuals are too big. icon_confused.gif

I use a mix of semolina, castor sugar (very fine grains) and gold lustre dust. I have also used semolina and lemon jelly crystals but found the jelly crystals absorbed moisture out of the icing and really darkened up (as on the power puff girls at the beach cake). Sorry about the small pics I can't work out how to upload pictures properly.

Graham cracker crumbs with some gold sanding sugar mixed in to give it sparkle (like the sun hitting the sand).

Here's the one I did: http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&meta=allby&uname=indydebi&cat=0&pos=6

Wow. Thanks for all the great tips. I will post the cake when it is finished. I am going to do vanilla wafers, graham crackers, brown sugar mixture and mess around with it until it looks right. I love the idea of gold sanding sugar for a sunny look.
