I have no idea how to "paint" on a cake. Can someone tell me what to do? I have the brushes and the palette and now idea what yo use a "paint". I am assuming that you only paint on fondant? Thanks for any help.

You can use the gel colors mixed with vodka(or any high alcohol content liquid/lemon extract). Using the high alcohol content helps it dry quicker on the fondant. Just mix to the consistency you want and paint. You might have to re-paint over it to get rid of brush strokes or if it is too light for you. Others, myself included, like the luster dusts to paint with, same concept(using it with the alcohol).

Edited to add...if you look in the galleries and see a pic of a cake that you like, that was painted on, PM that person. 99% of the time that person will get back to you and let you know exactly how they did it! Jen

I would love to know the answer to this as well. Can you paint on BC or just fondant? What do you use as a paint? Bump.

I have painted on BC before. (unfortunately it was one of the two cakes I have made that I didnt' get a picture of)

There are a few rules I think need to be followed when doing it though.
1) Have a crusting buttercream
2) Let crust for at least a couple of hours, over night is even better
3) I prefer wilton or americolor gels mixed with water or vodka (dries quicker)
4) Use a VERY VERY VERY soft brush, I bought brushes in a craft department at a local store for the different varieties, brough them home and washed them a couple of times. Haven't had any problems with them. I do keep a seperate set of brushes for my dust vs paints just in case.
