Hi Y'all,

Do the cake plates have to be at the least, the same size as the cake board that is sitting under the cake? OR can the cake plates be smaller?

You usually want the cake plate to be about 1" larger than the cake so you have room for borders. It also gives it a nice finished look.

It depends on the look you are going for. I aim from my boards for the top cake(s) to be ever so slightly smaller than the cake they are supporting. I pipe the borders as normal, albeit directly on the cake the is on the bottom.

Now the bottom one, that I tend to have be at least 2" in diameter larger than the bottom cake.
