I thought you guys might be able to help with a cake that is due this Friday. I am making a pair of flip flops for a birthday cake. I have never worked with fondant icon_redface.gif , so I am wondering what I can use for the straps? icon_rolleyes.gif I have thought about using the fruit by the foot, but they are wanting blue flip flops and orange stripes and writing. I have been unable to find orange fruit by the foot. icon_cry.gif

Any suggestions? How hard is it to use fondant? Could someone with no experience be able to use it easily? How long in advance would I have to do the straps in fondant? As you can see I need all the help I can get.

Thanks in advance

I was thinking you might be able to use orange airheads.

I roll out Jellies or fruit slice Jellies, Fuzzy Peaches etc for decorations and they work good. I used Fuzzy Peaches to make butterfly wings on my Tiger cubs cake.

For a light beach look colored marshmallows can also be rolled out and used.

Be sure and roll and leave for a little bit in case of shrinkage before decorating with them.

Hi,
I have made several flip flop cakes now and use either fruit roll ups or fondant for the straps. But like you said, the fruit roll ups don't come in orange. Maybe you could use yellow and pipe over them in orange buttercream? Just a thought.

Fondant is really easy to work with and you can tint it any color. Just cut a strip long enough for the strap and lay it on the cake. Very simple.

Or just pipe the straps in buttercream directly onto the cake.

Thank you guys, I think I am going to try the orange slices or the pipe over yellow. Fondant just plain scares the heck out of me. The airheads would work too. Thanks guys!!!!!!

I think fondant is easier to use for little things that it is to cover a cake. Some time or another you should jump in with both feet and start playing with it! It's texture is alot like play doh, and you can do so many things with it.

Wilton has some precolored packages now, so you wouldn't even have to worry with coloring it if you didn't want to. icon_smile.gif

The Wilton orange fondant is a really nice color too. They also make premade candy clay in orange too. Tastes like oranges!
