I am decorating a fondant covered cake, and was wondering which icing was best for piping. I was going to use just buttercream, but I saw in the Wilton book that they used royal.

I know that this may be a silly question, but does the royal icing make it crunchy? I am piping vines all over the cake.

Yes, the royal will go hard...... I understaand what you mean though, maybe someone else can give an idea for another type of icing that will be softer...

Yes, Royal Icing is good with fondant.
I think both become a hard equally and perfect for each other. If you want your design hard then use royal icing.
But you can use butter cream also.
Royal icing is good for lily flowers.

I am not expert either icon_smile.gificon_sad.gificon_redface.gificon_smile.gif

Thanks

I made royal icing but I was confusing with the consistency.
If you want to use tip 1, 2 or any small tip then add ½ tbs. water more than mentioned measurement and beat it until very smooth.
Otherwise it is very hard to squeeze.

I am still learning to make perfect royal icing.
Good Luck!!!

Thanks

I mix the fondant with a small amount of water until I get piping consistency and use this. It saves mixing a full batch of icing if I only need a little

I've always used Swiss meringue buttercream ..unless I'm doing brush embroidery on the fondant..then I will use royal.
