I am making a 95th birthday cake for my grandmother in about 3 weeks....actually I'm making 3 different cakes! I was planning on doing a tiered cake with something that would symbolize her on the top tier for her big party. I'm torn between a shoe and a hat with gloves. My gma always wears hats...no matter the weather and growing up one my fondest memories was that she always wore white gloves in the summer and black leather ones in the winter...especially to church. The problem is I don't know how to go about making a hat OR gloves for the cake. I have this idea in my head but as usual I think it's bigger then my ability. Any suggestions????
TIA

In one of my books (and I can't figure out which one -- just looked!) they have a fan-shaped cake with gloves on top. I believe the gloves were done in fondant and layed on top of the cake with flowers around it for a Mother's day cake. When I find the picture I'll post what book it was from.icon_redface.gif

Hi Chrissy,
I made some gloves out of fondant and it was really quite easy. I literally traced the outline of my own hand right on the fondant and cut out the shape with a sharp knife. Then I pressed a piece of lace fabric into another piece of fondant that was cut to the right shape to add a lacy trim on each glove. You could embellish them anyway you want. Here is a picture of mine.

Hope that helps!

I did a 'red hat' cake once, and just used half of the ball pan for the main part of the hat, and then added fondant around it for the brim. You could just as easily use a regular round cake for the hat 'body' and just have a different shaped hat. (The cake is in my pics, on the bottom of page 4)

I don't think you will find a way to do the gloves that is simpler and prettier than KimAZ's suggestion! thumbs_up.gif

Those gloves are PERFECT!!!!! I was just thinking today that maybe I could trace my hand but I wasn't sure about thickness and making them look "pretty". You have solved that problem!!

Momsandraven...I was thinking of making a pill box hat out of perhaps fondant. I want it just as decoration on the top of the cake, not actual cake per say. My mother just told me the colors are mint green and off white so I'm not sure what I'm gonna do now!
