Hello....I would dearly appreciate any help I can get - I agreed to do a cake this Friday and have just found out they want an Oscar's Theme - not real savvy with the Luster and Sparkle dusts and can't seem to find directions on how to do this. Please either IM me on here or yahoo (dondeebowlers) it would be greatly appreciated.

I actually have a question along those same lines...maybe someone can help us both. I am using silver and Gold "Highlighter" on a lipstick cake I'll be doing this weekend. I noticed on the container it said "for use on non-edible items". Is that true? I wanted to use it on buttercream. Help please! icon_cry.gif

only use the highlighter on things that aren't going to be eaten! it's not safe to eat. use gold luster dust instead. you can mix the dust with a little vodka and paint on with a good brush.
the other alternative is to use edible gold leaf, but it's a bit expensive and needs a little practice to apply properly. hope this helped. good luck.

Whats the 'highlighter' you speak of? The luster dusts are edible...not in massive quantities, but they are edible. There is a lot of debate about this subject though.
I e-mailed a gal this past week about how she got her York's peppermint pattie 'silver' and she said she 'blew' silver luster dust all over it after she frosted it with grey icing. It looked awesome...exactly the color I want for a cake in March. thumbs_up.gif
Dunno about the gold though...except maybe if ya made a mustard yellow color and blew 'old gold' luster dust on it.

this is the "highlighter" I was talking about...and it says NON-EDIBLE! icon_cry.gificon_cry.gif

This is just killing me. I am most upset that this stuff cost me a ton and I specifically told the TWO ladies at the cake store what I was going to do with it and neither one warned me not to! icon_mad.gif

Now I have to either go back to that store...the ONLY ONE in the area, and get the luster dusts or figure something else out because this cake is due on Saturday! icon_cry.gif

I am seeing one listed on eBAY as "Edible Gold Dust" and "Edible Silver Dust" the bottles look like the company Nic Lodge uses, it says they are in England.

Thanks - that helps, but have a few more dumb questions. Will gold and silver sparkle dust mixed with vodka work? And is there a certain ratio for mixing?

You can check out the sellers store for other colors.
This is not Nic Lodge's listing, I just think the containers look like the brand he sells. This seller is in England.

If you're talking about the sparkle dust Wilton sells, the answer is NO. It makes a gray goopy mess! I learned that the hard way icon_smile.gif

An alternative to vodka would be lemon extract. It also has a high alcohol content. You're looking for something that will evaporate quickly.

Personally I would think that cake store should exchange that for you. They "helped" you and did not warn you about it being non-edible, even though you explained what you were wanting to do with it. But that is just me! Jen
