Hi Everyone! I just made a cake for a parent/scout bake off and received some really great comments. I had a great time making the cake and now I want to do more.
I am thinking of enrolling in the Wilton Cake class. Can any of you give me an idea of what goes on in the class? Do you bake the cake at home and then decorate it in class? Do you have to spend a lot of money to buy supplies?...Joanne's charges $25 for the class and supplies...Michaels says you don't pay for the class, but you have to pay for the list of supplies. Do you end up buying more than the initial supplies given? What do you receive at the end of the 3rd Wilton class?
Finally... I have looked at the gallery of cakes on this site and I'm not sure if I would be so creative. Did any of you have the same thoughts until you actually learned more of the techniques? How has your work progressed?
Oh...and how many of you do a cake business on the side in your home? I would like to do that until my daughter goes to school and then possibly look for work in a cake shop.
All info would be appreciated.
Lisa
You are correct....you bake and frost the cakes at home and bring additional frosting to the class to practice the borders, flowers etc. We would practice and then decorate our cakes using what we had learned. They teach the basics in coarse 1 and add to that in coarses 2 and 3. In coarse 3 your final cake is a two tiered cake with fondant roses. I seriously doubted that I could do it, but I did and when I brought it home that night my neighbor asked whose wedding cake it was! I was so proud! It can get pricey once you get sucked into all the additional supplies. But, a lot of them are just for convenience. You can get away with just some basic items. I had lots of fun and am very glad I took them! Hope this helped a little.
Don't be worried about not being "creative." I'm not either--I never got beyond a stick man in art class! However, you'll learn all the tricks and people will think you're a creative genius!
As far as supplies--you can keep adding at a rate that's comfortable for you. As with any hobby, you can never have enough! Think storage space! Most of all, have fun!
Lisa,
Welcome to Cake Central. If you enjoy baking and want to learn decorating basics, the classes are great. I took my first class at a local cake store and the list of supplies for that class was pretty lengthy. I ended up spending about 150.00 for supplies and the class. Of course I have spent hundreds more since then on pans and other supplies. When you finish the Wilton's classes, you get a certificate showing that you have completed their courses.
I didn't start cake decorating till I was 42 years old. I never dreamed that I could do it. I have really enjoyed it so much. It is a stress reliever when I am doing it for fun. I don't have an official business but occasionally sell cakes from home.
I would like to do it full time at some point.

i took class 1 at michaels and the official list says you can expect to spend between 25 and 50 dollars. i definitely spent closer to 50! but you can do it for less. i have been gradually adding to my supplies since, and it doesn't feel so expensive a little at a time. but with any hobby you always want more stuff!
and don't worry about creativity! thats why there are so many ideas on this site, we all need a little inspiration sometimes.
welcome to cakecentral!
Hi there, well here in New Zealand we dont have the Wilton Classes but for me i used to just do my kids cakes... slabs cut to shape and only used buttercream and never knew how to pipe... then 6 years ago i joined a newly starting cake guild and there i learnt how to make roses, carnations and how to pipe and all about fondant icing etc.. and baked my first fruit cake... i was in that for about 18months till we moved with my hubbys job thenin the farming industry and never got back into guild until this year... thanks to those at the guild those few things i was shown then gave me the nudge in the direction doing what i am now i never knew about 3D cakes and they are my most popular cakes along with my flowers which i have self taught. Yes this can be a expensive hobby but SOOOOOO MUCH FUUUNNNNN hehe so glad i learnt about formal cakes etc... now i sell quite a few from home and have got really busy over the last 12 months or so so go for it.. do a course and see where it takes you if anything its one way of making new and good friends who all have something in common both young and old. Good luck and cant wait to see what creations you end up with... happy decorating from a kiwi
Thankyou for your support! I am going to try the class and see what develops.
