My local "Wally World" stopped carrying Domino's 10x sugar. That was the only place available here. I did a search on Domino's website and found that I would have to drive nearly 1 1/2 hours for the closest store carrying it now. So, I went to "the local warehouse" and bought something called "Bakers & Chefs 10x Powdered Sugar." I used it to make MMF and everything turned out great. However, I used it for my crusting buttercream recipe and it would not crust. I waited and waited and even tried the fridge....nope. Not even the next day....it kept sticking to my paper towel. Anyone know a good distributor that I can purchase in bulk from without a tax id number...for a good price? I have tried the FL brand and it is not good for piping. Any suggestions?

The Walmart closest to me now has Dixie Crystal powdered sugar. I didn't ask if they aren't carry the other. Have you noticed a difference in Domino's and Dixie Crystal?

Talk to the grocery manager at the Walmart and let him know that you would be purchasing in quantities, he may be able to order for you. If not there try any local grocery store.

The Dixie Crystal brand as well as the FL brand tends to give an airy effect to the icing. When piping it looks like it has tiny holes everywhere and is not smooth. My instructor said to never use these brands as she had the same issues. I live in a more humid state....guess that could be it?
I will give the Bakers & Chef's another chance and see what happens.

I prefer the WalMart Brand called "Great Value" and it's GREAT!!! I NEVER have any problems with it and I prefer it over Domino!

Oh No, I wonder why they stopped stocking the Dominos'? That's odd. I usually use Great Value but this last time I used Domino's just to see if there was a difference and to me the BC didn't seem as sweet as when I made it w/ the Great Value.

I have a question though; I thought for frosting it was best to use 6X PD?

I use 10X though because I can never find the 6X PD

I have used both the Good Value brand & the Dominos that I bought from BJ's wholesale. Both worked about the same for me. The wallymart stuff is $1.24 a bag ~ not a bad deal.

Hope this helps. icon_smile.gif

I've noticed that Walmart has had the dominoes sugar the last few time I went. I just thought they were out. I was also at Ingles the other day and they didn't have it.

I have also used the GV brand... not bad, but I like C&H better. Haven't tried Dominoes, sorry!

A little off subject, but the same general topic... does anyone know what X C&H Powdered sugar is? TIA!!

I will have to try the Great Value brand. I am just reluctant to change because of past issues with "airy" icing and because everyone likes my recipe. They say it is not sappy sweet like chain bought cake icing. Thanks for all your input. When I find something that works I like to stick with it....I don't adapt well to change and I admit it.
