I was asked to make a cowboy hat for someone. I saw the how to thing on here and the person used fondant/gumpaste mix. Would it be possible to just use fondant? I don't have any gumpaste experience. If so, can it be MMF or plain fondant? How long would it have to dry to keep its shape. Also, I don't own a cowboy hat. Anyone have a suggestion of how I can mold the brim another way. Thanks!

I havent made one...but...after you shape it, use paper towels to hold its shape till it dries. Fondant will dry fairly hard without gumpaste. thumbs_up.gif

if you use just fondant be sure to knead in some gum tex, easily available where ever they sell wilton. this will make it dry faster and harder. kind of like gumpaste. Gumpaste is great when you need to roll something really thin, like petals. but for the brim, the fondant and gumtex will do.

Thanks for your help guys! Now I have another question. I am making this cake for a birthday party and they said they want the cowboy hat and I told her $45. Now they want a mini cowboy hat for the little boy to dig into. Well, I am not sure how much to charge for the little hat, and also, should I make a little 6 in. round or something to make sure everyone gets cake? I am only using the oval pan from the course 2 kit and they said it needs to feed about 20 people. Arrr. I hate this part. Then what would I charge? This ladies bill would be up to like $70 if I got my wish. I hate to charge that for a birthday, but I need to make money from it. Please an advice would be awesome!

how old is the littleboy? i would be tempted to make it out of a large cupcake, turned upside down, trimmed a little and placed on the brim just for the kid.

I think you will find afterwards that $45 was a little low, but look at this one as experience and a new photo for your album. You'll know better how to price it next time.
