I have a feeling a friend will be asking me to do a doll cake soon. Have checked out the gorgeous cakes in the galleries and have a few questions. Is it better to use the doll pick or a real doll. If using a real doll, how the heck do you put itin the cake wihout destroying the structure of the cake? Assuming itis wrapped in something. Is buttercream or fondant the best to use? And most importantly, price.....am thinking between $35 (being it will be my first). Again, love all the pics I have seen - hope to be able to come even close to those beautiful cakes!

The pick is WAY better. It is made to fit perfectly in the Wondermold pan. Also, I think the Wondermold pan is way better than a bowl. Well worth the investment. I if you live near an AC Moore, you can print a coupon for 40% off on line to buy the Wondermold pan OR just a doll pick. I try to keep at least one blonde and one brunette in my stock.
I charge $23 for a doll cake without another cake under it. If there is a cake under it; I charge my regular price for the cake under it and add $12 for the doll portion.
If you plan to use a Barbie you need an extra 8" cake under the wondermold, it makes the skirt the perfect height and she doesn't look like she has really short legs.
There's one in my photos that is done that way.
I personally prefer the real doll over the pick, I guess I think they look a little better. Make sure you wrap the doll's legs in saran wrap to make her easier to clean.
I'd charge at least the $35 for it, they're quite a bit of work.
Hi Ladies,I was going to look at some books and saw your topic in the forum box, and had to chime in. I'm going to be doing my first doll cake this March for a bridal shower, I'm doing the one in the 2007 Wilton yearbook. It is the one with the bride dress and bridesmaid dress's on hangers. I'm charging $45.00 for the bride and $10.00 per bridesmaids. This stuff is time consuming, but I love doing it. Don't be affraid to charge. My Wilton teacher charged $55 for one. Her cake was very detailed.
mbelgard, your doll cake is beautiful ... also covered in fondant. I do mine in all buttercream. I'd charge more it I were using fondant.
I just made one... I didn't use the mold pan. I just used round 10, 8, and 6's. i stacked and filled them. I let them get cold and then just shaved (with a ser. knife) to the shape I wanted. I then iced it and covered with fondant. I used the real barbie and it serviced as a great dowel. Also had one other dowel inside of it just in case. I think the shape can come out much better this way. Although it was my first time.. and my shape needs some work haha.
But you have more control this way I do not like the wilton pan.
