I've never decorated cookies as detailed as what everyone has done here but all of your cookies are so awesome that I'd like to give it a whirl. How much time would you say you spend decorating them? Any tips for a first timer in delving into cookie decorating?

I've been away from cake decorating for some time due to time restraints but really have the bug to start up again. My son will be turning 5 in 3 weeks so I will be doing a couple cakes. Cookies are a hit in my house ~ but alas all I've been doing are the quick break off and bake cookies icon_cry.gif I know, pretty pitiful icon_lol.gif

It depends on how detailed you want to get and how many you're making. I'd suggest planning on at least 3 hours for a batch not counting cleanup, they do take a long time.

I love using MMF - gives you very clean lines, I have also started using candy melts for details, drying time is much faster. Good luck!

It usually takes me at least 20-30 minutes per cookie. I have another amazing cookie decorating friend and it takes here that long too. Here's my favorite cookie.

My only advice is to just enjoy yourself. I take so long because I find it really relaxing. Good luck.

WOW fairytale I LOVE your work ~ I wish I was that creative and talented!

cakesbykellie ~ I think that's what I will have to do is just try to plan everything out. Do you bake one day, decorate another or spread the decorating out over a couple days?

I work full time, try to get to the gym 2-3 days a week (a necessity since working extremely hard at losing the last 30 lbs of 70 lbs , I have a soon to be 5 yr old and to top it off my mom had a stroke and heart attack first weekend in Jan and the hospital she is in is 2 hours away so I make the drive everyweekend.

Thanks. Yes, my family is 5 generations from a coastal town. My grandfather and father were commercial fishermen. The sugar egg was done with my dad in mind. It's my favorite theme.

I usually do my cookies in batches. Made the dough and the mmf(love the mmf on a hot cookie method) one day. Made the cookies tonight. I planned on detailing Sunday but think I may pull extra hours tonight so I can relax with my family on Sunday(NY resolution, I have been failing at).

Tonights cookies are not detailed--conversation hearts and gift boxes.

So maybe space things out so you can still do all your other stuff and enjoy baking.

With 3 littles 4 and under, this is my therapy!!!

Hope things with your mom look up!

I usually make my cookie dough first and refrigerate (NFSC) overnight..and make my RBC the same day. I bake the next day and sometime I freeze them until I am ready to finish them or I let them cool a few hours and then decorate.
It all depends on my time and how much details I want to add to them.
Good luck! I enjoy the cookie bouquets more than I do cakes. I have also gotten into the candy bouquets and sometimes I do a mixed bouquet of 3 to 5 cookies with a candy or two also.

we typically bake one day, coat with fondant for those cookies we are using fondant for, then detail the next day?

then dry overnight, ready to ship or package?

here's a sample
