I am in the middle of a cake for tomorrow icon_surprised.gif
I am supposed to make the tower of flowers fron the wilton book (Course3) Simply blue fondant covered cake with some flowers en the sides. I already made one (Just one level though). It was really easy to make. I did it with Ready to use Wilton Fondant.
This time I am using MMF, but the $%* flowers do not want to attach to the cake. they keep falling icon_cry.gif
What should I do? I am doing it with BC. Should I put a toothpick in every flower? icon_eek.gif Then they have to take them out before serving...
Also is my first tiered cake. I am planning in putting 3 straws for support. It is a 10 and 8 in. cakes. My question is can I use straws, or do I have to use the wooden dowel?
Should I put one that goes all the way to the bottom of the cake? How I am suppose to do it through the 8in. cake board?

Sorry to ask so many questions, but is 1:00 am and I am really tires of those %$$%* flowers.

Hope somebody can help me out.

Sorry your having problems. I can't answer the MMF question, haven't tried this yet (though I intend to!)

As for the dowels... if it is only 2 tiers, I wouldn't use one through both tiers, unless you are traveling with the cake after stacking. If you sharpen the end of your dowel you can pretty easily drive it through the first tier and cardboard. Use a rubber mallet or hammer. Just be careful and drive it through slowly.

I also haven't tried straws, only dowels. I have heard that straws work if the top tier isn't too heavy.

Good luck! Hope someone is out there who can answer your flower question.

Thanks so much. They are gonna pick up the cake. So it will be traveling already stacked. So I guess I do have to use the the one in the middle.
Do I have to put something in between the tiers so they won't stick together? Like wax paper or something like that?
Should I use just wooden dowels?

Bivianna just insert your straws I say 4 in your bottom layer. You set your 8" cake on the board on top of the straws. place straws in square shape so you have equal balance on all sides of cake. stick your flowers on with water or royal icing if you don't have ri you can stick your toothpicks in but hide them and remember they are there if you are cutting it HTH

I would use royal icing to attach the flowers. If you have meringue powder, you can make a quick royal icing using the powder plus powdered suagar and water. I attached a big gumpaste bow to a MMF covered cake using royal icing just the other day.

For the staking, you could cut a hole from underneath in the 8 inch board and put a straw through it. I've done that. (Ace of Cakes just did it too in their last show to help prop up a cake that was leaning toward the side.)

You can put a wax paper circle underneath the board of the top tier -- that way it will come off easily when they disassemble the cake.

Yes, you should put the dowel through the top. won't be a problem if you are going to cover the top with flowers.
