So I was watching "ace of cakes" last night and he was saying that he mixes his luster dust with vodka sometimes instead of water...This may sound like a dumb question but, are you suppose to mix luster dust with something? I thought you just painted it on like a powder? What do you do???

I like mixing it with vodka - works great.

You can also mix it with Lemon Extract-or vanilla-just something with a high alcohol content that will evaporate and leave the sheen. I use Luster Dust as a dry brush as well as wet. Personally, I use Rum to mix mine with just because that's what I had on hand.

Good question! I've wondered the same thing. I mixed mine with water, and you couldn't even tell I painted anything on there. So, it has to be something with alcohol? Good to know!

I prefer mixing it with Everclear because it has a much higher alcohol count than Vodka, rum, vanilla or lemon extract, no oil in it and it dries much faster than anything else I have tried.

definately not water. it is not water soluable, plus the water will make the fondant gooey. you can brush it on dry or use an extract (the higher the extract the better) or a grain alcohol.

I always wondered what to mix it with as well. What about just alcohol, would that work?

I've read where clear alcohols (gin, vodka, rum) with high concentrate of alcohol are the best as mentioned. Also heard about the lemon extract. It's the alcohol content you have to read.

maybe this is a dumb question, but i just wanted to make sure! mixing it with vodka won't leave any alcohol on the cake? i make a lot of cakes for little kids and wouldn't want them to have any alcohol on their icing! icon_redface.gif

No question is silly! But no, it won't leave alcohol behind, it evaporates and leaves the dusts behind. Same with cooking with liqour.

Not a dumb question at all. I'd also like to know. But Ms. Shirley mentioned it evaporates?

Strange but true...peppermint schnaps worked tons better for me than vodka. My first painted cake in my pics was with schnaps - the color is very bright and nice. The most recent was done with vodka and the colors suck!

And the alcohol evaporates so no worries about the kiddies!

Maybe something in the peppermint oil? Mint has some strange properties...

Does the dust have to be painted on or can it be sprinkled, say on V-day cupcakes or something? I have bought some and want to use it, but don't want to waste it.. any suggestions on using it without wasting it on my Cupcakes?

The dust is really fine so ya dont wanna sprinkle it on. Either dust it on with like a 'rouge' brush, something soft and bushy-ish or paint it on. I mean, I guess ya could sprinkle it on but ya wont get the full effect...this stuff is really cool looking when painted on fondant...it looks quite amazing!
