Thanks so much for your help. I will admit that I have always struggled with math. So, I have no idea how to figure this out.
I am using the Wilton oval cake pan set. I'll list the sizes as this will surely help.
Oval sizes :
16 1/2 X 12 3/8
13 1/2 X 9 7/8
10 3/4 X 7 7/8
7 3/4 X 5 5/8
I'll also be making (2) 9X13 sheet cakes
According to my Wilton book this amount of cake should serve 193. That is if I serve very small 1 1/2 X 2 . I don't like serving that small of a slice of cake. I would like to serve a 3 X 3 slice.
If I make the ovals and the two sheet cakes will I have enough cake to serve 150 people a 3 X 3 in. slice of cake?????? That's were I lose it.....I can't figure it out...so, if someone would please help me I would most appreciate it!!!
Thanks in advance,
Chrissy.....Off to get yet ANOTHER cup of JAVA! ![]()
Yep - that is a HUGE piece of cake!!! Remember that the Wilton charts are for cakes with 2 layers of each sized cake - so 4in depth of cake, and if you bake to the top of the tin (like me), then by the time you've filled those cakes and got your decoration on, they'll be at least 5 - 6in tall! A 1.5x2x4in slice of cake is not tiny, if you want bigger, then go with a 2x2x4in slice, and really, you shouldn't need bigger slices than that for any occasion - even for real cake lovers! My own party chart shows that the 4 tiered set of ovals will serve at least 100 good-sized pieces.
As for your sheet cakes if you are doing a single layer, then a 2x3x2in slice should be more than sufficient, so the maths for that:
9x13 = 117in divided by 6 (2x3in slices) = 19.5 slices
So for ease, I would cut the sheet cake in 3 along the short side, and 6 along the long side, giving you 18 servings per sheet cake.
Hope that helps a bit!
Thank you so much for helping me!!
As I sat and thought about it you guys are correct a 3X3 slice of cake will be very large.
Instead I think I will go with a 2 X 2 and if there is leftovers, which there should be, then they may have another small slice.
I am very use to serving people with large appetites....my DH and I have five boys...I buy potatoes in 50# bags...LOL!! So, when I think about serving something to someone I am so use to having to cook BIG portions.
I never even put into consideration that they will be layer cakes...even the sheet cake....so they will be deep. I'm filling one with strawberry mousse and the other with a Bavarian Mocha Cream.
This cake is for a birthday party....a large guest list !!!
Thanks again for the help. It's really nice to know that I can come here for help and get it!!
Thanks again,
Chrissy.....who is all tanked up on bean juice!!
