Tonight was my first night of course 3 Wilton Class and my first experience with fondant. I have been reading on CC that some people really don't like the taste of fondant and others say it's not too bad, so I was anxious to find out for myself. As soon as I opened the bag, the smell struck me! It was awful! Of course since the smell itself wasn't enough to deter me, I had to taste it to see if it was as bad as I had been reading on CC that it was... oh my gosh, I have never tasted anything as horrible in my life ( well, that may be a slight exaggeration, but it was awful!). I can't even imaginge putting that on a cake and having someone eat it and not know that it is supposed to taste that bad!! That would be one way to get a bad rep. I don't know if I would ever feel comfortable using fondant on a cake that I made for someone or not. I know that it makes a cake look beautiful, but in the end, if it doesn't taste good, the looks of the cake are kind of pointless. That's my opinion anyway. ![]()
Believe all of us when we tell you collectively as a whole entire group, Wilton is NOT the be-all end-all of cake supplies. Try making marshmallow fondant, directions in the articles on this site. Try Satin Ice, which is just another brand but MUCH better tasting. Check out a Collette Peters book and make it from scratch (my personal favorite option.) Try some more things before you give up. I don't think you'll find a single person on here that likes Wilton fondant. I think it tastes like stale cooking oil. Most (including DH) think it has a chemical taste to it. Either way, it's just plain YUCK-O. They out to put the little poison yuck face on the box. ![]()
Before you give up try satin ice. It has wonderful vanilla flavor! Actually I believe if you contact he company they will give you a free sample.

Try something else, before you form your opinion of fondant in stone. Remember like everything there are bad products out there and Wilton has the worse fondant that i have ever tasted. For the ultimate fondant try Choco pan. It is a wonderful chocolate fondant, its harder to work with, but oh the taste will put all else to shame.
IMHO wiltons fondant is only good for practice, i wouldn't even use it for decoration for fear someone would try to eat it.
Just to emphasize what everyone else has said, don't form your opinion of fondant on Wilton's. It is the worst I have ever tasted and won't even touch the stuff. I use Satin Ice and I love it! The chocolate is great too (tastes like a Tootsie Roll) and Wilton doesn't even make chocolate anymore. Wilton was the first stuff I tried too and I thought I will never use fondant. But you just have to search around until you find one you like to use or make and stick with that. I made a princess cake for a 3 year old this year and covered the whole thing in Satin Ice and all the kid's LOVED it! I thought for sure they would pick the fondant off but they didn't. So definitely don't give up until you've tried more brands or made your own (I've tried to make my own but the recipe I used didn't work out well and I have found it easier to just buy it). If you decide to try Satin Ice, I get mine from www.thebakerskitchen.com. They have the vanilla and chocolate and all the premade colors. Plus their customer service is great and quick delivery.
