How about a grey icing painted with silver luster dust mixed with alcohol? I also just saw on ace of cakes Duff used white royal icing and painted it with silver luster dust/vodka and it looked pretty silver to me.

Why don't they sell luster dust @ Hobby Lobby or Michaels? We only have ONE cake supply store here in town & they don't keep regular hours. It's kind of hit or miss to find them open.

Hobby Lobby and Michaels are Wilton Distributors.

Hobby lobby also has another line of candy making products but other than that they are Wilton Dealers. Probably because they have Wilton classes and Wilton only wants their products used in the classes.

someone mentioned here somewhere to brush silver luster dust on black icing...

I don't think you can get a metallic silver without luster dust. You will always end up with gray...

I have never heard of silver icing without using luster dust, and have searched the web for countless hours. Here is a recipe for piping silver, but not really used to ice a cake with.

From www.sugarcraft.com
Piping silver and gold

2 ts. Powdered sugar
2 ts. gold silver or metallic highlighter crafting dust*
clear alcohol
1 ts. clear piping gel

On a small ceramic plate, mix sugar and dusting powder. Add a few drops of clear alcohol (gin or vodka is suggested) and mix with a small palette knife to create a stiff paste.

Add the piping gel, a little at a time, mixing well until the consistency for piping in reached. Use a very small piping bag and tip as needed. The leftovers can be put into a small container and stored in the refrigerator. It will keep indefinitely.

Researched and invented by Brenda in cake club a few years ago.

I made silver (silver enough) icing on my basketball cake in my photos. Just use equal amounts of black and royal blue icing.

Ok, this cake was made by mixing luster dust directly into the icing. I bet you could PM the creator to find out how much!! That icing is totally silver! It looks awesome!

I think that it would be lovely to do a different color for a backgroud and then use silver for the highlights. This is a cake that I did for my sister's wedding and I used silver dust to match her wedding dress. Look in my photos at the wedding cake with silver scroll work. I did the scrolls in royal icing and then painted them with silver dust. They turned out Beautifully. You could also do a topper of the anniversary number in silver royal icing.

Melvira...your right! That is REALLY silver...just what I need! I pm'd her and am waiting for a response. I never thought to just add it to the mix. Kinda got me thinking about the other luster dust colors...about just adding some different ones to the mix...wonder how they'd turn out? Guess maybe I'll have to try it sometime....more experimenting!

Oh I know... isn't that silver awesome!?!? I wouldn't want to pay what it would take to cover a whole cake, but it would be so cool to make maybe a cup of it to do piping and accents. I have this cake I am going to do that is all silver and rhinestones, etc. I think it would look awesome with some silver piping!

BTW... please let us know what she says so we have an idea of what it takes!
