I've seen some people ask questions about pricing sheet cakes. Do most of you price your sheet cakes cheaper than other types of cakes?? B/c I have just been doing price per serving....doesn't matter if they want a sheet cake or other type cake. I know I charge a little more for my cakes than some of the bakeries around here do (0.25-.50 per serving). But most of the bakeries have even cheaper sheet cakes!!

I just sold a sheet cake to some of my coworkers and some were upset b/c I didn't lower the price for a sheet cake. I told them I gave them $0.50 per serving off b/c they were my coworkers and the cake was actually for my friend (but they got an edible image & chocolate molds!!!). But that made the cake $1.00 per serving...and it fed 50 people. But that was the lowest I would go. So a few didn't want to pay anymore and the others had to pick up the slack.

I don't feel 'bad' for charging this much and actually think I shouldn't have given them a break....but my friend really wanted me to do her baby shower cake and let everyone know those were HER feelings....and since she is pregnant......not many people were willing to argue w/her!! icon_lol.gif

Just wondering what the 'norm' (if there is one) is on pricing sheet cakes.

I charge a flat fee for my 11 x 15 one layer sheet cakes..period. If I torte it and add a filling, there is an addtional fee. If I double stack my sheet cakes, then I double the fee. I tell people right away what my prices are..then they can decide if they want to order or not! I used to have a hard time telling people what I charge..you know, kind of hesitant...not anymore!!

I Hadn't thought about the double/single layer. Guess most sheet cakes are only single layer, while the other cakes are double. Will have to take that into consideration!! However, the same amount of ingredients are used...if not a little more. It took me two batches of cake and one and half batches of icing (so had to make two) for one single layer sheet cake (two 9x13 together).

But I don't mind telling people my prices anymore! Got over that quick (my time was becoming to valuable)....now I tell them and like you said....they can take it or leave it. But some people are always going to complain no matter what!!!

Guess I was trying to figure out what the reasoning would be to price sheet cakes lower than other types of cakes.

..yeah, I see what you are saying. The only time I charge per serving is on a wedding cake because they tend to be more detailed and involved. I have a starting price per serving on wedding cakes and then additional charges are added on accordingly.

I charge one fee.. I was charging 30 for an 11X15 filled with the icing.. now I charge 35.00. I still think this is not enough.. Because I so ever they want. Still working on the " 35?? Sam's has them cheaper and bigger".. I think " I know!!!!!!!! GO TO SAMS THEN!!!!". Remember I said "I think". But hey can't win them all...

You know, I just sold a cake to a coworker (sheet cake 11x15) for 1.00 a slice. I am adding a 2-d sculptured butterfly on top with a buttercream transfer and creating a sky and rainbow scene with airbrush. I am worried I charged her too much, but my time is valuable right now. I'm in school full-time and working and don't have much free time. I said I'd do it because she's a friend, but I purposely set the price a little high.

My question is...is this ridiculously high? If so, is there any way to offer restitution without sounding like I don't know what I'm doing (I'm a newbie at this whole selling cakes thing)?

I'm also delivering it across town for free!

Well, we just had the party and the cake was HUGE hit!! NO LEFTOVERS!!! Of course those same people who refused to pay...sure had their fare share of cake. icon_mad.gif I didn't think they should have any...but it wasn't my party so I had to keep my mouth shut!! tapedshut.gif What made me the maddest (is that word??)...was they kept saying how good the cake was and how good a job I did!! All I could do was smile and say Thank You b/c it was a work function and I didn't want to upset the Mom to Be. icon_evil.gificon_evil.gif

But like everyone else.....my time is precious....so I think I'm going to keep my prices like they are. Those who actually paid for the cake said they could never have gotten a cake that tasted good and looked good from walmart, sam's, or even one of the bakeries!!! They said they didn't mind paying for it...and two of them ordered bday cake from me...for Reg. price!!!

I was questioning my prices until last Friday when I was finishing the yellow anniversary cake and my two yr old son walks up and in the sweetest voice...says..."pay wit mommy....pweaz!!" To see the look on his face when I had to say NO b/c she was coming to pick it up that night. That pretty much sealed the deal for me!!! He even did his sign language for please. And I had to finish the cake, which I didn't charge enough Ifor MHO!!!

So now everytime I take a cake order I have to think about how much time I'm spending away from other things!! I'm not trying to not get orders....but I'm starting to learn...my cakes are worth more!!! But I might lower my sheet cake prices a bit. I'll have to call around to the bakeries again and get some prices.

There is always someone in the office that does not want to put there part in but is always the first in line when the serving starts.

Thanks, Mrs. Missey. I have been charging 30 for the same kind of sheet cake, but that is in Canadian money.
Pink Bunny your cake is lovely, the colours are beautiful.
