Thanks to all of the beautiful cakes on this site made with the gumpaste bows and flowers, I wanted to try some of the decorations. I am experimenting with the flower making kit to make gumpaste flowers, however, I made gum paste with the Wilton gumpaste powder, and the gumpaste was very soft. Is this the texture it should be? or is it stiff like cookie dough? I have never worked with gumpaste before.

Thanks

When you first make gumpaste it is soft...but should not be sticky.

Once refrigerated it will get much stiffer and you have to knead it to get it in "working" condition.

I made the wilton gumpaste last week for the first time and i had to add alot more 10x than the can said. It was very very sticky, so i kept adding sugar until it had the consistency of fondant. was that right? It worked fine - i made bow loops that dried overnight!

I usually make my own..but in a pinch will use the Wilton...I don't add to much sugar...if you push your finger into it, it should not stick.

I rub some cornstarch in the palm of my hand when I roll the gumpaste before using it...I use about a pingpong sized ball to begin making flowers..
