Has anyone here ever made feathers out of fondant? I'm making a red hat soceity cake, it's going to be a red hat with some flower and big feather coming out of it. I wanted to make the feather out of fondant but I wasn't sure if I could do it since I'm fairly new at using fondant. Anyone have some tips for me?? Thanks!!

When I used fondant on my cookies I had 2 doves I was decorating...I used a small sharp knife and basically randomly sliced the feathers at the back.check my photos..It is the wedding cookie bouquet.HTH

im sure it can be done with gumpaste. But another medium would be wafer paper.

rice paper would be a good alternative...don't know how big a feather you want to make
I would say make from gumpaste instead of fondant.
I made feathers (small ones) on my Mardi Gras masks

you could try it out of fondant or gumpaste i guess. roll it kinda in a hump thickness, and cut the feather shape out around where it goes thin-fat-thin and use an exacto knife to cut it and the tiny details.

i bet no one except me is gonna understand any of that. sorry

It is so easy to make your own silicone molds for gumpaste or chocolate. All of you should try it at least once. But if not, here is a mold already made for you. You could mold gumpaste, fondant or chocolate in it.

I've done fondant feathers before. But I don't like them, they are heavy and break easily. The rice paper would be best since it will be sticking out of a hat and the paper is lightweight.

If you must do fondant, strengthen it with tylose or CMC powder (which is like using gumpaste). A feather is really like a giant leaf shape with the bottom cut to have a longer stem. Then lots of indents and cuts along each side for the 'feathery' parts. The best would be to use the mold Shirley suggests.

Thanks so much for all of these tips!!! I think I will try the gumpaste or rice paper.
