You guys have made beautiful cakes that look like a gift with the lid open and tissue coming out. How on earth do you do the lid. I would love to do that effect on a cake that I have an order for this weekend. Help would be really great. Thanks

I have not made a cake like this but one of my books has it. They suggest either 1) use cardboard for the cover and ice it, or you can do royal icing and let it harden. Dowels hold the lid up. Hope this helps.

I made one and use a single layer of cake with a board and covered it in fondant. That way after the party they still had the lid like another cake to eat, they absolutely loved it.

thanks. I have 3 cakes to make for this weekend. so the lid might get scraped but maybe I'll feel adventurous. How did you make sure that the cake lid did not slide off?

I made the lid with a cardboard base and the dowels I pushed into the lid a tiny bit to hold it.

I was wondering if rice crispie squares could be used?

I made one of those and I actually used a shoebox lid and covered with fondant and painted with luster dust. I used dowels to support it. Next time I will use cake or rice krispies. I just ran out of time.

I was inspired to make one a few months ago. The photo is in my gallery. The lid was a slice of cake torted from the top layer cake. I used cardboard for the bottom. I iced it just like a reg small cake. The hardest part was actually getting the MMF to look like tissue paper coming out. My husband laughed at me at my efforts. Because the lid is slanted I found my bow was top heavy and wanted to fall off. I had to hide toothpicks to support the back loops. I also doweled it in place about a third of the way back and used a short dowel to hold the front of the lid up. It was fun but I would certainly charge alot more if I did one again. Pam from Bama

I've heard that you can also use styrofoam for the lid; just cover it in fondant.
