Can anyone please share how they make these? Are they just free hand, or are they molded? I'm wanting to make them for a baby shower cake, and was just wondering what's the easiest method. TIA!

use a small round cutter or the back of an icing tip and cut out a circle. then use a dowel or small round object to make an impression in the middle. use a small round tip or a toothpick to make the thread holes (2 or 4).

the wilton book (this info was posted on a thread the other day- i dont have the book myself) says to get a ball of fondant and flatten it instead of cutting out a circle.

They make button molds in several styles and sizes for fondant or gumpaste, but if you don't have access to molds you could take a real button and lightly coat the BACK with vegetable oil, make a small ball of fondant about the size of a marble and press it onto the back of the button. Remove and let it dry.
