How much is it going to cost you? Have you priced out the cookies and the royal icing? What about bowls to color it in, the colors, sticks to stir it with, and the sprinkles? Are they using sticks or spatulas to spread it on with? Bags to pipe it with? Tips and couplers? Rubber bands to hold the bags closed? Wax paper to work on? Something to put them on when they are done?
How long are you figuring it will take? How much do you want to make per hour of doing it?
I charge $10 per child, min of 8. That gives them four cookies, three colors of icing in squeeze bottles (they can purchase more separately along with more cookies if they want), a few diff shapes/colors of sprinkles, a take-home box, and a gift certificate.
I had figured my cost is $3/child. Includes 2 cookies, 4 colors RI or 2 fondant, sprinkles, squeeze bottles & rolling pins & cutters (which I get back), and one hostess. Activity is 1 hr and $10 with a 10 child min. extra hostess required for more than 25 kids at additional charge.
So, if I have 10 kids, that is $100 minus $30 for supplies, which leaves me with $70.
This is for an event coordinator who wants to offer this to her clients so I would go to the location, so I am working a special deal with her. I figure this is equivalent to a build-a-bear party and should be reasonable.
GREAT idea about the gift certificate! How much do you give it for? Did you design them yourself and print them?

It's not just the time that you're there doing it, but also your prep time, travel time, clean-up time, restocking time, gas to travel to the venue, the store, etc. to consider. So $70 for 'one hour of work' sounds great, but, in reality, it's not just 1 hour.
Not trying to talk you out of it, just helping you to realize it's not just the '1 hour' of the decorating time that you're involved in.

saberger, I just print up something on the computer, nothing fancy, and usually for $5. It's also one more thing the kids are getting with my info and hopefully going home to show mom what they want for their next birthday party!
Also, I don't go to the event. They get everything packed in a box or two to host a party at their own home. I've done a few where I went, and I wasn't really needed. I outline the cookies and had shapes to the design in a coloring book style. The kids fill in the blanks and add their own sprinkles and other decos. I've seen 5-year-olds handle it just fine without any adult help really.
I just had a friend ask about a cupcake party. She just wants the cuppies and decorations for 8 to 10 kids. I don't even have to be there. Any ideas on price for this one?

I actually would think cupcakes should be more since now you are talking about cupcake wrappers, whereas cookies don't have that.

I think the only difference is that she doesn't have to be there, whereas you do. So you want to charge for labor.
And you're also giving them fondant...and I don't think she is. (But I could be totally wrong).

I like this idea ... have a pre-set 'do it yourself' decorating party (min. # required to purchase), with $X per additional 'kit'. You prep the package, deliver it, collect the money and you're gone! Works for me!
Oops, meant to say that I "add shapes to the design," like circles and squares that make coloring in more fun. Like on a butterfly wing; I add circles and divide the wing into different areas to add more colors.
Hi Celeste! Sorry it took so long to reply, I was at the Covered Bridge Festival all day yesterday! Anyway, $12 sounds pretty good. Maybe I could come up with different upgrades for an additional cost. Just a matter of taking the time to come up with the packages and maybe print them on a "menu". Thanks!
We had a really good time! Too much junk food though! It turned out to be a beautiful day weather wise. Maybe 62 and sunny. The decorating parties sound like a great idea. I'm definitely going to work on some packages. Great to hear from you. Hope you and your family are all well.

I was at the age of birthday parties not TOO long ago. I remember my parents calculating it out with me. We came to a decision that $200 for a birthday party with 7 or 8 friends (this was for ages 5-12ish) was very reasonable. So from a customer point of view, I think people would be very willing to pay $20 per child.
Considering birthday party alternatives (ice skating, movies, bowling, Build-a-Bear, etc.) this seems to fall within the price range.
Since I package a box to go, the bottles get left with the party host/person who bought the cookie party box.
