Any Tips/tricks On Making A Cupcake Cake?

Hi,
I am really wanting to try a cupcake cake and have seen some really amazing ones on here and would love to know how it is done.
I would appreciate any and all tips/tricks/instructions that anyone might have for making one.

I did my first and only cupcake cake about a month ago. I just looked on CC and read stuff-and jumped right in.
It really wasn't that hard. The hardest part was probably deciding how big my cake board needed to be. I was aiming for about the size of a 9x13 sheet, but because the cupcakes kind of fit into each other, my cake board ended up being too big-but that's not really a problem.
The part of the cupcake cake that I had a (personal) problem with was the icing that you put on the bottom of the cupcake to hold it to the board. This was for a party of 4 and 5 year olds, and I didn't want the gooey icing on the bottom of the cupcake to end up on the front of their clothes while they were licking all the icing off the top of the cupcake. I found some little glue dots that I put on the bottom of the cupcake, and they stuck really well to the board.
I was worried that the cupcakes would wiggle everywhere when I tried to put the buttercream on them, but that didn't happen. I was able to cover all the cupcakes and even smooth the bc with VIVA towels. I had made a FBCT to put on the cake, and it fit right on. I think I just had beginner's luck, because it was super-simple to do.
another hint.
use a cake pan to hold the liners -- square, rectangle, round, heart.
they will bake to conform to the shape of the pan.. tho' they won't be perfectly round, but who cares in this case.

I've done a few ccc. They aren't difficult to make. Know how many you're going to feed, bake the cuppies, place them close together, without crunching, in the shape you want. Put a dab of icing on the bottom of the outside cupcakes (to hold them in place and keep the shape) then using an icing tip pipe a layer over all and smoothe. Some will (of course) go into the spaces between but you can gently level your your icing and smooth as desired. My icing is always a little thicker than I'd put on a sheet cake but it can't be helped when you're dealing with the spaces between the cupcakes. I enjoy making cupcake cakes. They can be a little tricky to serve if everyone tries to get their own. I've seen someone pull the icing off neighboring cuppies by just trying to yank one off the cake. Depends on whether you'll be there to serve or the hostess is going to let guests have at it. The latter can be a problem. Explain to a hostess how to separate them for best results and they're fun.
