1)Ok, I have read alot of topic on prices of cakes. I too, am struggling with how much to charge customers. I have a lady that is wanting two cakes next week. A grill cake, I'm gonna charge her $40.00 for. She is wanting a 1/4 sheet cake as well. My price on those is 25.00. Should I give her a discount since she is getting two? Please help me!! Thanks to everyone here at CC I get alot of great ideas on everything. If I ever have a problem you guys are ALWAYS here to help me!
2) check out the grill cake that I did before. This is what I'm doing again. I'm charging $40.00 for it. How much do you think this cake is worth?
Thanks!
I don't think giving her a discount for purchasing two cakes is a good idea. Why? Well because when she orders a third, fourth, and fifth cake- she'll request another discount. Just because she's ordering two cakes for two different occassions, doesn't mean that you short sell yourself short either...
And you by the looks of it, she'll definitely keep ordering form you again
First off--great work!
That grill cake is soo cute!!
It is worth far more than $40.00, but you will hear that again.
I would not discount the second cake. I make a lot of cakes and one of the biggest sellers I have are centerpiece cakes. Clients buy several cakes and use them as centerpieces for the tables. I have done this for weddings, birthdays, showers, etc. They might buy 10 cakes, and I don't give them a discount. Each one takes me just as long as if 10 individuals bought the same cake. Also $25.00 for a 1/4 sheet is not a lot of money. I think that is more than fair.
Your prices are all ready too low, so no discount. I can't believe you only charge $40 for that grill!!

Thank you! Yes, I think I'm under charging for my sheet cakes as well. BUt I have checked with two local bakeries here in my area(not Walmart or something like that). They actually charge $2.00 less than I do on my 1/4 sheet cakes. So that is why I'm going with $25.00 on a 1/4 sheet cake. I mean these ppl have been in business for years. You need to be price comparible with them right?? I mean some cakes on here are very beautiful and I could see speniding alot. But for a real simple 1/4 sheet ppl are asking $100-$150 or $5.00 a slice for a 1/4 simple sheet cake. No one around here would give that kind of $ like that around here for a cake. It really makes it hard on cake bakers when it comes to pricing. Yes, I think my work is worth more than what I charge but I'm afraid ppl wouldn't pay what I would like to charge. I have heard too many ppl say it about other bakeries. Thanks for all you input and comments! I really try hard when it comes to my cakes!
I get my haircut by the same woman every 4 weeks. I have yet to get a discount for repeat business! Sometimes its good to ask "Would I expect "x" from another business or grocery store"-or better yet, actually get it????

I disagree on what you can charge versus the other bakeries. First, they buy their stuff at wholesale prices and their using a mix base for their cakes. I don't knowif you do scratch or mix, but that does effect your prices. I'm sure they also put out more sheet cakes then you, also letting them charge less. For the most part,a basic sheet cake starts at a $3.00 a serving, with that said a lot of people have a price minimum regardless of what the cake is, plain and/or small. I don't know anyone who goes to $5.00 a serving for a basic sheet cake. I could be wrong. Now unless you live in a town where the money is totally gone (everything in foreclosure, 80% unemployment), I gurantee you will find someone willing to pay what you ask. Your attracting the Wal-Mart customers. Change your price point to a better price and yes, you will lose customers, BUT you eventually attract the ones that are for your price point. People WILL PAY for what they really want, regardless of what they can afford (we all know this to be true) & unless those same bakeries your talking about will do that exact same grill cake for $40, then I don't see why you can't charge more.
Thank you so much I have never thought of it that way!! I guess you can tell I'm new at this huh? Thank you so much for helping me! I will most def take another look at my prices.!!
You are so welcome ! And I really would love for you to sk one of those bekeries how much it cost to make a carved cake. Find out what they charge.
