Urgent Help! Cornstarch On My Chocolate Fondant!
Decorating By firehorse Updated 28 Jul 2009 , 3:11am by JanH
I'm hoping someone is online who can offer some advice. I have a cake to finish tonight for tomorrow morning. I thought I had read that cornstarch was preferable to icing sugar when rolling/smoothing fondant because you could just brush it off. The fondant was sticky so I put a bit on top so I could actually use my fondant smoother but now it won't all brush off. It looks like I have a snowfall effect on my nice smooth chocolate fondant. Actually it doesn't even look as nice as a snowfall effect, I just have white here and there and it doesn't go with my design at all!
Is there something I can do? I need to start the royal icing piping soon or I will be up all night. If anyone can offer a suggestion I would greatly appreciate it.
thanks in advance!
You could try taking a bit of shortening and rubbing the effected areas with it...
It may leave the fondant shiny so I would go over the entire covered area to keep consistent

I rubbed a little crisco on the counter and rubbed my pastry brush over that, then brushed each and every star - it worked good. Then when I was almost done I noticed my darn pastry brush was shedding. Isn't there a pastry brush that doesn't shed????
Oh geez, my sister bought me two of those for Christmas and they're still in the drawer. I never thought of using those. Thank you. Also, the next time I roll out fondant I will definitely not be using cornstarch - a light coating of crisco worked better.
If you have an airbrush you can air brush with alcohol-it evaporates and doesnt leave any alcohol on the cake. Or sometimes, when I don't feel like lugging out the airbrush, I just VERY LIGHTLY dampen a paper towel and rub evenly around the entire area/cake. It makes it slightly shiny at first and very slightly damp, but dries pretty quick and looks like regular chocolate fondant. Good Luck!
