Unusual I know, but whatever. I need to make a dump truck wedding cake. There needs to be a gumpaste/fondant truck with a bride and groom in the cab of a dump truck.
First of all I am clueless on how to make the truck out of fondant/gumpaste, let alone put people inside of it. Second of all, what do I put on the rest of the cake???? The guy owns a dump truck and they thought this would be a unique cake. Granted it will be but I am really stumped...do you put flowers on the other tiers? Candy Rocks? HELP!
3 main sections....
the frame, the bed, the cab.
the frame: I'd do out of balsa wood to get most support. attach wheels with straight pins.
could make out of square logs of fondant and glue on wheels (reinforce with toothpics)
for greatest strength at cross pieces between wheels run a toothpick all the way through from side to side (or if making larger version -- some sort of thin dowel or even a piece of floral wire)
bed --- just 5 pieces of fondant. back flap would work best if used toothpick at top edge to support.
cab -- hollow -- just several pieces glued up. I'd build all the front and top and leave that back piece off. then I'd make the figures and stick them in the cab. after they're in and secure (lots of glue and toothpics) I'd add the back. I detailed in the wheel well fenders in the pic.
to tilt the bed -- rest back end slightly off the end of frame and use glue and toothpicks to pin to frame at that point.
then make two more square logs (or toothpicks wrapped in gumpaste) that rise from frame to front end of bed. (not truly accurate to how trucks are made but will do)...bed should tilt at about a 30degree angle.
depending upon size you make this, the wheels could be disks of gumpaste, mini-oreos or if making it really big -- full size oreos
----
then I'd make a multi-tier cake and a couple hundred of those cute little royal icing drop flowers in the bride's color(s).
fill the bed of truck with them and have the rest literally falling down the side of the cake in a jumbled cascade -- idea here is that some are turned on sides, some even upside down -- random pile just like would be if really just dumped off the side of the cake.
Piles of flowers in a cart bed. (It's sideways, so you'll need to rotate it.) http://farm1.static.flickr.com/74/215848032_6284aebdf5_o.jpg

7yyrt-love the flowers in the bed of the truck idea.
Now I can go to work!
Doug - did you make those drawings up just for the OP? Or did you have them drawn up already? Just curious! Those are super nice as usual!
Doug,
I am new to this forum, but all I can say is "YOU ROCK!" Have read so many of your post and you are just one awesome person!

those took me about 1 1/2 hours start to finish (ok, so I was a bit distracted by the TV at the time)
yes, custom made just for this post.
of course, now that they're made and saved....they can make encore appearances as needed.
(and one again -- MS Publisher strikes w/ a little help from PhotoFiltre)
